A mysterious smoke plume that looked like a missile firing off the California coast on Monday may have been an aircraft and not a missile, U.S. military officials said.

It said an approaching aircraft can leave a horizontal vapor trail that looks like a missile shooting vertically from the ground or sea.

All things considered, I’d tend to go with the contrail explanation. But, if it was a commercial aircraft they should have the flight plan and radar tapes by now - can’t figure out why that is taking so long.
