The navy has a facility on a channel island...:
San Nicolas Island, California
*************************************EXCERPT***********************************
San Nicolas is a US Navy owned and operated island. Located 65 nautical miles southwest of the Point Mugu complex, San Nicolas Island is the cornerstone in the Sea Range capabilities. The waters surrounding the island are split into three zones that are controlled by the Navy.

I'm worried that they learned about it on the internets, with the rest of us. As soon as the missile breached the surface and fired engines the DSPS satellites, or whatever they have been replaced with, would have immediately transmitted launch warnings to the proper command centers and they would have tracked the RV/s to their impact points.
Either a unfriendly sub found a way to sneak past our sensor screen or we launched one for reasons unknown.

“A hobby missle isnt launched from 35 miles off-shore...”
Actually, if you built one that size, you might do exactly that to avoid getting arrested for doing it on land.
So you take you boat out....

I think ChiCom boomer and a fouled up test launch. Safeties were probably off. A ChiCom boomer 35 miles east of LA is a de facto act of war, but it also is a method of enhancing their nuclear posture vis a vis the US. Think back 48 years ago to Oct 62. The USSR’s nukes were vastly inferior and Cuba became a force multiplier. A couple of Chicom boomers off the West Coast bring the midwest AND US strategic HQs into range. If we know that then we in their view must limit our options. The danger here is that this event can bring this into the open. Imagine if the Jap Carrier TF had been discovered 350 miles NW of Pearl on Dec 6. That would have been an act of war. This would be if anyone publicly admitted what has happened.

I have seen dozens of missile launches while living in Ventura county. That would be just a bit south of Vandenburg AFB.
I saw the video, and that is most definitely a solid fuel missile going up. They do not show the origin of the launch but for an instant, but you can see the cloud of exhaust at the sea surface.
Google up a few images of sub launched missile shots. It will be very clear.

” the plume starts at water level.”
That’s cuz you’re watching from over the horizon.

I say a nuke for a nuke. Don’t our subs have authority to nuke any responsible entity if we are nuked? Oh, 0bummer has to give his OK first? Darn!

When TWA 800 went down (off Long Island) there were close to 100 eyewitnesses who saw a missile rise up from the sea and strike the plane, causing it to explain. A careful government investigation determined that this did not happen, and that a spark in the center fuel tank was the actual cause of the explosion. Because we don't have terrorists launching missiles right off our coasts. That doesn't happen. Ever. I mean it. Yep. They also deleted all the radar tracks of the missile, too.

I have to agree with your co-workers. Something arrives about 35 miles off the coast of the US undetected and fires a huge missile in whatever direction they like and the US military knows not a thing about it?

I haven't seen the video yet but
Looks like pretty soon after launch.

Missile that size, with that kind of fuel would roast a pleasure boat on take-off.

The missile was launched at sea an was obviously pretty good sized. Even if it was it was some amateur rocket enthusiast firing the mother of all hobby rockets, it is scary to think that we might not have any capability to detect such a launch or possibly even the vessel from which it was fired. It could just as easily been a missile filled with chemical or bacterial agents or radioactive materials and fired toward LA by some terrorist group.
