The death toll from a hostage siege inside one of Baghdad's leading Catholic churches has risen to 52, with at least another 50 wounded, as questions began to emerge about the scale of the Iraqi assault that brought the violence to an end.

Casualty figures have been rising throughout the day, less than 24 hours after al-Qaida aligned gunmen stormed the Our Lady of Salvation Chaldean Catholic church in the central district of Karrada.

Since it was packed full of CHRISTIANS - it didn't matter tot eh Iraqi Security Forces that they lived - they just wanted to end the hostage ordeal and didn't care the end result.

‘you are infidels,’” Mahrouq said. “Things like: ‘we’re going to heaven, you’re going to hell.’ They were just youths.”

Michael Moore must be proud of his “freedom fighters”, and Bill Maher must be ecstatic.

No, I don’t think that was it. The lefty press is just attempting to shift the blame from the Muslim attackers to their would-be rescuers (which I read did include US forces, btw). The Muslim attackers started off by killing one of the priests and detonated suicide bombs among the worshippers. It’s possible that some people were killed during the rescue attempt, but probably all of them would have been killed had the Muslims been left there much longer.

Agreed.

Trying to rescue everyone in such a situation is practically impossible. Plus many of them were already dead, as you say.

Instead of Somolis, these are the kinds of refugees we should be taking in.

What? Allow Christian immigration?

You gotta be kidding.

Some will make excuses for al Quaeda by saying this wouldn’t have happened if the US hadn’t invaded Iraq, and that this is just a retaliation. I know there’s an Evangelical radio host who takes that position, but that argument just makes excuses for murder and denies al Quaeda’s responsibility for its own actions.

There will be little if any international outrage over this incident, because the US didn’t do it.

Remember a few years back, that french oil tanker, the Limbergh, had a boat full of explosives run into it Cole-style?

I remember reading a snippet of an article from that, always wished I'd saved a source for that.

Anywho, they were interviewing the people who set that up and one of them said:

"Well, of course we'd have rather had a US destroyer. But that's ok. They're only infidels."

That's stuck with me for a long time.

We're all only infidels that Muslims just haven't gotten around to butchering yet.

“...include US forces...”

Those US Forces are not participating - they are on standby if the IRaqi Fores are over whelmed. So - they might have been there as a precaution. But was a “hands off” operation solely on the back of Iraqi Security Forces (I use that term loosely)...
