Cops look for pit bull owner after Clayton attack (TEENS SAVE MAN)

Clayton County police are looking for the the owner of a pit bull after the dog attacked a man in Jonesboro on Wednesday.

Jose Padilla was walking his Chihuahua on Brookwood Circle when a pit bull went after him and ended up biting him on his legs, Channel 2 Action News reports.

The pit bull was caught and will be put down after a 10-day quarantine to determine if it has rabies, Capt. Mark Thompson, commander of the Clayton County Animal Control Unit, told the AJC.

Teens who were waiting for a school bus helped stop the attack.

"That pit bull went right at his neck," 15-year-old James Smith told Channel 2. "The man could've died easily."

Smith said he put his leather belt around the dog's neck, "not too tight, not to choke it or anything, but to get it off him."

Anyone who can identify the pit bull's owner should call Officer Tiffany Phillips at 770-477-3684.

Definitely a good job!

There seem to be a lot of pits out roaming around on their own lately - we had an attack in Jacksonville a few days ago. I think people get them, can’t control them and just let them go.

Pit bulls roaming out on their own should be shot on sight.

I didn't know that Jose Padilla, infamous homegrown Al Queda terrorist, had escaped prison.

Good "collar" dog!

Smart thinking on the kid’s part to use his belt as a leash plus he took a gamble on his own safety to save the man. My wife and her dog were attacked by a pitbull and a woman delivering papers saved her by opening a rear door and screamed at my wife to jump in the car...

Can’t the cops just do what they did back in the old Lassie show? Whenever Timmy was lost, the sheriff or ranger or his parents would just tell Lassie, “Go find Timmy.” And then they’d follow him to wherever Timmy was drowning or in a well or being eaten by a mountain lion. I mean, can’t they just tell this pitbull, “Go find your owner, boy”?

In many cases, the owners are about as dysfunctional as the dog, so it probably wouldn’t matter. (Pits are the big thug/meth lab/gang banger dog here.)

I agree. We actually need better off-leash enforcement in a lot of places.

Sort of off topic, but the other thing that used to unnerve me when I lived in big cities was the number of small women who had gotten big dogs for protection. I remember being in the elevator with another resident of my building, a slight woman who had a particularly big, chesty mastiff, and thinking I shouldn’t move a muscle, because there was no way she could have controlled that dog if it launched itself at me. It was obviously not listening from a command from her and she could not possibly have controlled it in any case.

I view the problem coming more from the owners than the breed. Any dog can be trained to attack.

I know a lot of people disagree, but I was raised with a registered boxer that was trained to attack on command. He didn’t back down from anything that he viewed as a threat to his family (us).

You're talking collies. When's the last time you've seen one? Nobody around my way has them.
