WASHINGTON, Oct 1 (Reuters) - Automaker fleets would have to achieve substantially higher fuel efficiency -- between 47 and 62 miles per gallon -- by 2025 under a preliminary plan to further slash U.S. gasoline use that was released by the Obama administration on Friday.
Gasoline and electric hybrid vehicles and electric cars would play a crucial role in meeting the higher-range targets, according to the analysis crafted by federal environmental and transportation regulators.
"We must, and we will, keep the momentum going to make sure that all motor vehicles sold in America are realizing the best fuel economy and greenhouse gas reductions possible," Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said.
The auto industry is wary of any mandates that would increase costs or adversely affect production schedules for passenger cars and light trucks, which include sport utilities, vans and pickups.

Not if the Metropolitan Transportation Districts are run as reparations, and the affirmative-actioned MSD bureaucrats allowed to loot and steal just because of the color of their skin.
Might as well mandate 1000 mpg. The internal combustion engine is probably nearing its limits as far as what’s technically feasible now. Notice that is feasible, not profitable or useful.
So we will all be driving motorcycles and scooters? Great. Where do I put the groceries?
Why not 1000 MPG?
Seriously, with this line of thinking why didn’t they just legislate safe, room temperature fusion into existence?
How about a 5,280 foot mile?
If gas mileage was just a question of legislation, why don’t they just set it at 100 mph?
There won't be any food, so it's a win-win.
Exceptions will be made for important officials like union leaders, Congressional Democrats, and environmental activists.
“Great. Where do I put the groceries?
There won’t be any food, so it’s a win-win.”
Okay, great, one less thing, you know. That Obama is a miracle worker.
Hey! Just make 10 trips!
You just have to go to a restaurant...but wait, that makes you fat...OFF TO THE GULAG WITH YOU, THINKER! ;-)
My vacant lot next door is going to acquire a metal building that will hold several cars. Time to hoard them just like ammo. I’m 61, no need to buy another new car, ever.
OK, I’m going to ‘splain this once. See, to get 62 MPG, you can either spends billions on research into efficiencies and weight savings and all sorts of new technology, or you can make a car that gets 31 MPG get twice that by simply halving (sort of, I chose to use the same numbers but rearrange them) the distance a mile is.
(Kinda why I threw in the 57 states part)
Instead of leasing like we usually do, we purchased a Ford Flex. We are planning on keeping it until we bury it. They won’t take my big vehicle from me!!!!
That’s the point of these liberal a-holes!.....it will never happen so put everyone on bicycles!....welcome to their third world for all of us!
Why stop at 62, why not make it 100?
