Fox News sued by feds for retaliating against reporter Catherine Herridge in sex, age bias case

It's looking like all out war against Fox News.

Just days after the president slammed the cable news network, declaring it "destructive" to America's long-term growth, the feds are suing Fox News for allegedly retaliating against a reporter who says she was discriminated against because of her age and gender.

It's the latest in increasingly hostile rhetoric against Fox News, not only from Obama but from Rahm Emanuel and the president's former communications director.

According to the lawsuit, filed by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission on Thursday, Catherine Herridge, a national correspondent who covers homeland security complained about discriminatory practices in the network starting in 2006.

Herridge, now 46, claimed "female and black correspondents were given less desirable shifts" in the network and that oftentimes assignments (including an anchor job) were denied or "taken away from her" due to her sex and age.

In 2008, the network said it found no evidence of bias, and when her contract came up for renewal, it included language barring her from making more discrimination complaints, according to the lawsuit.

Herridge, who joined Fox News in 1996 as a London correspondent, refused to sign the contract.

The lawsuit says the language in the contract was retaliatory.

I dislike her cold demeanor. And I met her! REALLY cold demeanor.

She does not seem to have engaging “skill sets”

I agree, she seems to lack personality.

Most of the FOX crew seem to be fairly packed with personality.

A lot of these types of EEO cases just get settled. Its usually what the judges want too. So unless Murdoch wants to make a big scene out of this it will likely be quietly processed and the woman and her lawyers will line their pockets with green.

But it would be very interesting if Fox decides to fight it out.

Maybe if she had TRIED to look female thing would have gone better for her.

I will say that Catherine Herridge has terrible, cringe-inducing diction. Never liked her as a news reader.

"At that point, she would sue for retaliation. Fox is in a "can't win" situation. Women who sense their careers are heading down currently have an incentive to sue for discrimination, because then any attempt to fire or downgrade them will be seen as "retaliation"."

I wonder if it would be retaliation if a few thousand viewers wrote Fox and indicated they would turn the dial any time she came on as the reporter?

Bad move by Fox, not to mention being of dubious legality.

It’s perfectly obvious that she’s being discriminated against because she is not blonde.

Get some Miss Clairol, sweetie.

And there’s a standard name for it:

Canadian accent.

Short-sighted, yes. I believe right now he’s focused on getting through the November election and how this might taint any Fox reporter. After that it will be time for a nice, relaxing vacation, then he can magnanimously call his DOJ dogs off Fox. But he is prone to strongarm tactics (just ask BP and WalMart) and is accustomed to getting his way, at least temporarily. The happiest time of my recent life will be watching his agenda get repealed, piece by piece, God willing.

Very disappointing story... I always liked Catherine and I always liked/thought that Fox had a very tight-knit family of journalists and reporters.

My guess is the Feds are hopping into this hoping that they can wreak some havoc within the FoxNews newsroom between now and election day. This Admin is desperate.

The meter of her speech is off - extremely grating. I, for one, have always disliked her delivery.

So she sucks and can’t figure out why? Just listen to yourself speak, girl! It’s unnatural. Not what people want in their newscasters.

I thought she was rather pretty but the hubby says she looks scary— the haircut too severe and and he says that makes her eyes look strange and starring.

I think she’s pretty, looks slightly like Audrey Hepburn but her personality is FLAT and zero.

Agreed. Never cared for her onscreen personna. I sympathized with her though when she had such a difficult year with her son when he was born.

She donated part of her liver so that her infant child would survive a few years ago in Pitts. They both are doing well last I heard

that’s what i was going to say! i know she is still there and was reporting only this week. I DO recall Shep Smith referring to her at one point as the “TERROR PIXIE” when introducing her and i mean within the last year, year and a half, and that sounded EGREGIOUSLY sexist to me and i don’t look for that kind of thing ever!

“Katherine gave up 1/4 of her liver for her newborn child...”

Yes, and I’ll bet $ that Fox gave her a paid leave of absence during her time of need. Some gratitude on her part.
