It looks like Tom Donilon, Deputy National Security Advisor, and Ron Klain, Biden's Chief of Staff, are the front runners. Both of them, like Rahm Emanuel, are old Clinton guys.

There's also talk that Phil Schiliro, Obama's Assistant for Legislative Affairs, could be a "surprise pick". If he does go with Schiliro, it could be significant, because unlike Rahm and the two frontrunners to replace him, Schiliro doesn't seem to have any Clinton Administration ties.

Schiliro a relative unknown, but the President seems to be a big fan of his. Before joining the Obama Administration, he was a 27-year veteran of the Hill, having worked as a Congressional staffer since he was fresh out of law school. He is mostly associated to Henry Waxman and Tom Daschle.

If Obama picks Schiliro, then he's sending at least some kind of message. I don't know enough about Schiliro to say what that message would be, except maybe that he's tired of all the Clintonistas around him.

It really is a tangled web that has been spun by Rouse, Axelrod, and Emmanuel, but Rouse has indeed been the key figure in the Obama Administration when it comes to Alaska and Palin.
