Sarah Palin may be edging closer to a 2012 presidential run, telling Fox News "I would give it a shot" if the American people think she's "the one."
The former Alaska governor and 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee was in Des Moines, Iowa, Friday for the Reagan Dinner, a big GOP fundraiser in the heart of water-testing country for presidential candidates.
Palin has remained coy about her ambitions, but she elaborated a bit in an interview with Fox News, attaching several conditions to the possibility of a 2012 presidential run.
"If the American people were to be ready for someone who is willing to shake it up, and willing to get back to time-tested truths, and help lead our country towards a more prosperous and safe future and if they happen to think I was the one, if it were best for my family and for our country, of course I would give it a shot," she said.
"But I'm not saying that it's me. I know I can certainly make a difference without having a title. I'm having a good time doing exactly that right now."
Palin, a Fox News contributor and best-selling author since leaving the governor's mansion last year, has become one of the Tea Party movement's biggest allies. She's also thrown her clout around in the GOP primary season with a string of endorsements.
She said in February that she'd be "willing" to take on President Obama in two years, and White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said Friday he suspects she's testing the water.

Since it got knocked off my ping first page and I never read the article in the first place I thought that may have happened to other FReepers on the list. This article is the first that I’ve read this.
I shall never use the ping list again. (Although I was told that I could.) Sorry.
I have no intention of calling her a "tea bagger" and my name isn't Keith.
Nobody else is stepping it up at this point. DeMint has just started, but Sarah is the only Republican leader of the Revolution at this point. The Republican establishment are still acting like it’s 2005. I’ll vote for her in 2012, no doubt in my mind. Paul Ryan or DeMint would make a good VP.
Karl Rove is already fit to be tied. The Republicans are spend-crazy as always. G. W. Bush outspent every POTUS in history, and the Republicans didn't lift a damn finger to stop him.
If she is the best the GOP can come up with in 2012 I would vote for her. I think McCain really hurt their chances. Finding a good running mate that won’t slow her down will be tough.
John Bolton for foreign policy, Fred as her “Cheney”, Haley Barbour for his contacts, fundraising and experience, Bobby Jindal for obvious reasons or a military officer.
I like Fred he doesn’t walk around like a robot that needs to be oiled, so that’s a plus.
You mean she is just playing with these folks hearts ?? I think they have now reached a critical point where they can't imagine a life without President Sarah grizzly. How long can she lead them on ??? Till 2012 election day? Someone will need to talk them down slowly. How about if she announced cancer (then) like that guy from NYC did? Would they buy that?
Looking at the comments at Fox News, it looks like some on the Left are already rabid about this.
According to you Palin should have spent 2 years being continually investigated on bogus, state-paid ‘ethics charges’. She would have ended up several million dollars in debt and she wouldn’t have been able to govern.
Well guess what. The Governorship isn’t a suicide pact.
Unfortunately for you and the other Dem shills on FR, Palin realized that and she cut the Gordian knot.
She put another Conservative in charge of Alaska, and since then she has gone countrywide to destroy the RINO power base.
Instead of this continuous whine about the Governorship, how about looking at the sea-change she has effected in your country? None of that would have happened if she had been in court for the last two years.
Mixed feelings about Sarah......though if she were the nominee, I’d definitely get behind her.
me too. At least I can say I didn’t donate to that RINO Brown from Mass..
” She has to at least say that she might run or she risks having her gravy train come to a halt. “
Correct. It would kill book sales.
Fixed.
>My point was that if you listen to what others are saying out beyond the small circle of intimates you referred to, you can get a better sense of how much support Palin has among the general public. <
I have been looking and see some VERY good signs that a lot of people are Anti Obama now. That is a great thing. But we need to put the arm on the GOP to put up a REAL conservative.
many times people don’t vote for a candidate, but rather AGAINST a candidate. I think that there will be a lot of voting against Obama. We just need a real conservative to run against him, unlike McCain.
For too long the GOP has thought or at least acted as if they needed to run liberal - now it is time for them to get their act together and put up some strong conservatives and run with them in earnest
As II just said to someone else, for too long the RNC has put up liberals because they think or at least act as if a real conservative can not win.
I am with you on all you said. But I think we need to make sure that the RNC knows at this point that they need to put REAL conservatives up again and stand by them. That is what the people want, not RINO’s ..
They would be amazed at the results, but they seem to be very far removed from what real americans want by the numbers
IF??? You have posted many times that she is the only candidate. If she announces she is not running sometime next year, do you think that would be acceptable? (short a personal serious illness like cancer)? Wouldn't that be letting the country down?
