WASHINGTON An enormous and impassioned crowd rallied at the steps of the Lincoln Memorial on Saturday, summoned by Glenn Beck, a conservative broadcaster who called for a religious rebirth in America at the site where the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his famous I Have a Dream speech 47 years ago to the day.
Something that is beyond man is happening, Mr. Beck said in opening the event as the crowd thronged near the memorial grounds. America today begins to turn back to God.
It was part religious revival, part history lecture, as Mr. Beck invoked the founding fathers and the black-robed regiment of pastors of the Revolutionary War and spoke of American exceptionalism.
-snip-
Officials do not make crowd estimates because they are unreliable and can be controversial, but event organizers put the number of attendees at 500,000; NBC News said it was closer to 300,000, but by any measure it was a large turnout. The crowd stretched from the Lincoln Memorial to the Washington Monument.

Exactly! and how sad that some would deny all Beck has accomplished because they think their religion is better than his religion...
Can't tell you what she had to say, as it's of no interest to me and I shan't bother reading them. (Life is definitely to short to be throwing pearls to ...)
gotta feel sorry for anyone steeping in so much vitriol.
(I did have to include her in this post notice as it's FR protocol, so will probably get another string of posts - ahahaha)
According to Wiki, Stevens went to a Catholic school...had a Swedish Lutheran mother & a Greek Orthodox father...[European Lutherans or Greek Orthodox don't emphasize the "born-again" portion of their faith]...and then according to Wiki, in his pre-Islam swing, "He had looked into 'Buddhism, Zen, I Ching, Numerology, tarot cards and Astrology'"...
So Stevens was all over the religious search map.
Hey, on the one hand, Mormons who came & assisted you with your garden was good solid neighbors helping neighbors theology -- the kind that will impress you.
But if you're forever going to judge what people have done on the surface and never look under the hood...and I've never seen you be specific on correcting exactly what is supposedly a "lie" or a "distortion" -- which means you simply in engage in shotgun accusations (what? didn't your parents...perhaps RC? ever tell you that if you're going to launch into shotgun accusations to be a bit more specific?)
If people, seemingly good people, came & helped me with a key yard project. And then I found out later that they believed their good deeds landed them into godhood status, I'd wonder what their true motivation was for their good deeds. Was it some boomerang kickback where they get divine brownie points?
Listen. Anybody who's auditioning for godhood is going to be on their best outward behavior -- and that includes being a seeming good neighbor.
Jesus Christ highly complimented the outward behavior of the Pharisees by saying that unless somebody's outward righteousness exceeded their's, they would "in no wise inherit the kingdom of heaven." (see Matthew 5:20) Vigilante, you've done what Jesus did: He complimented the outward behavior of the legalists of His day.
But there you stop; whereas Jesus went on and described the inward nature of these legalists. He described them as whitewashed sepulcres (tombstones):
Allow me to quote Jesus directly: You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. 26Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean. 27"Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of dead men's bones and everything unclean. 28In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness. (Matthew 23:25-27)
Quick question EJ. I’m not looking for your views on what the LDS belief is, rather what YOUR personal belief is.
The Buddhist in China that goes his entire life living his religion because it’s the only religion he’s ever been taught or had access to. He never even hears of Jesus Christ let alone has the chance to accept Him before he dies. Does he have a chance to get into Christ’s kingdom according to YOU?
The money for the event came out of Becks own pocket

Prove that ...
Resty: Was it not a mircle that one lonely Mormon got over 650,000 folks of other faiths to come join togather for the good of the country!
Sandy: Yes, it was a miracle

I hope you 2 can prove those numbers...
Hmmm...Saundra...seems to me that Lds "prophet" Ezra Taft Benson thought in part that the tares were within Mormonism: "Not only are there apostates within our midst, but there are also apostate doctrines that are sometimes taught in our classes and from our pulpits and that appear in our publications. And these apostate precepts of men cause our people to stumble" (Conference Reports, April, 1969 p. 11)
Besides, Saundra, from a Mormon theological perspective, the Mormons have taught that ALL Christians are "apostates" from long ago -- and that the "separation" you referenced took place shortly after Jesus left. (That's what so "funny" about a lot of the non-Mormon Freeper allies of Mormonism...Even if a lot of them are no longer active Christians, well, their parents likely were! By siding with the Mormons, they agree in Joseph Smith's condemnation that their parents were "apostates" and "corrupt" who believed in "abominable" creeds!)
Saundra, you do still believe in Smith's "prophetic" statement in Lds Doctrine & Covenants 1:30, don't you? (And if Beck is a TBM, he's gotta believe this, too). In D&C 1:30, Smith talks about a "foundation ... of this church, and to bring it forth out of obscurity and out of darkness, the only true and living church upon the face of the whole earth..."
So Saundra: Do you believe that the Mormon church is "the ONLY true and living church upon the face of the whole earth" as Joseph Smith proclaimed and called it revelational, canonical "scripture?"
If I were looking for a church, Id be very much inclined to look into the Mormon brand of Christianity

Nope it aint there...
You wont find much...
Translation: The gospel is "off-limits" to where "I" say it is.
We are fighting communists! I would rather, as an evangelical, stand side by side with Mormon brethren in freedom in the battle against communism than have to wonder where the Mormons are in that battle. The enemy of your enemy is your friend and we can debate Mormon/Evangelical doctrine in a FREE SOCIETY if we win this battle. If we lose, those discussions will be meaningless
April, I could have "sworn" that Christians (were they to "swear" that is) that we take our cultural cue from a certain "Lord" named Jesus Christ? Who are we to follow when it comes to setting cultural priorities? Jesus and the apostle Paul? or April Lexington?
Here's Jesus:
"I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more. But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear him who, after the killing of the body, has power to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him." (Luke 12:4-5)
So does Jesus say, "fear the 'communists?' (No)
Instead, does He say to exercise fear of the One who has authority to cast somebody into hell? (Yes)
So, indeed, our "fear" is on behalf of those who are placing their eternal spiritual lives at risk. As for "uniting" I could probably guess that the folks who the apostle Paul warned the church @ Ephesus about had the bulk in common with the sheep there. Both groups were "religious." So, did Paul play the "allies"-game-don't-divide-us-you're playing? (No)
As the apostle Paul was leaving the church of Ephesus, he warned them with this high-priority alert:
"I know that after I leave, savage wolves will come in among you and will not spare the flock. Even from your own number men will arise and distort the truth in order to draw away disciples after them. So be on your guard! Remember that for three years I never stopped warning each of you night and day with tears." (Acts 20:29-31)
Paul's cultural priority? (Defend against the false disciples who will proselytize the flock and draw away men unto themselves!)
Tell me something, April: If you did something tearfully night and day for three years, do you think it's rather important? So what? We're just to conclude, "Oh, the man who contributed a good chunk to the New Testament -- what does he know about cultural priorities?"
I'll take Paul's and Jesus' already-revealed priorities to your guesswork.
Not really.
Millions of scientologists followed a pied-piper sci-fi writer.
Millions of Moonies followed somebody who represents himself as another "Messiah" who calls himself "Lord of the Second Advent."
And how many "tag-alongs" followed Joseph Smith and to this day sing the hymn in the Mormon hymnal called "Praise to the Man"??? [Note for non-Mormons: "Praise to the Man" is a song about and to Joseph Smith; it's NOT about Jesus Christ]
Hey, I love my Lds extended family.
* By all means, let's serve Boy Scout troops together.
* Let's feed the poor together at our food pantries.
* Let's continue to join together in funding campaigns like Prop 8 in CA.
But when Mormon rally-leaders start tossing out the framework of a "god" as supposed "common ground" -- a god who...
...was supposedly once a spirit-turned-man-turned god...
...was never God from eternity past...
...who's only going to let temple Mormons live with him forever (yes, you non-Mormons...if you think Christianity is exclusive, read the "fine print" of Mormon doctrine & you'll see that they teach that God the Father is ONLY going to live with married temple Mormons forever!)
...then how is that "promoting" a common ground?
How is it on the one hand that we have Beck the "rally leader"
-- yet on the other hand we have Beck the Mormon missionary?
Joanna Brooks, a liberal Mormon, wrote an article Oct. 8, 2009 at ReligionDispatches.org entitled "How Mormonism Built Glenn Beck." Here's an excerpt from article:
Beck, who was raised Catholic in Washington state, has produced, with the help of Mormon Church-owned Deseret Book Company, the DVD An Unlikely Mormon: The Conversion Story of Glenn Beck (2008); Mormon fansites invite visitors to learn more about Becks beliefs by clicking through to the official Web site of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
So when you go to the Lds church-owned Webg site at http://deseretbook.com -- what description do we find about Beck's DVD entitled An Unlikely Mormon: The Conversion Story Of Glenn Beck? Here's an excerpt of Deseret's description of GLENN BECK's PRESENTATION that GLENN BECK APPROVED for his religious body to circulate worldwide!
An Unlikely Mormon shows the real Glenn Beck. But be careful, Glenn's enthusiasm for his faith is contagious. ...In this presentation, Glenn Beck tells an audience of nearly 7,000 about his conversion to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints...Glenn bears his testimony about home teaching, tithing, and the transforming power of the Spirit. ...Glenn's story will strengthen the testimony of any Latter-day Saint. In addition, An Unlikely Mormon will be an ideal missionary tool.
There ya go. Glenn Beck, the new Mormon missionary pied piper!!! (With converts galore!!!)
In post #192, GC, you said you were a "Presbyterian." I would hope that from your lofty judgment post of Elsie, that it might at least be a PCA denomination or other conservative Presbyterian.
Because if you happen to be Presbyterian - USA, do you have similar lofty judgment statements vs. your Presbyterian brothers & sisters in the Pres - USA denomination which has abortion as part of its health insurance plan for churchworkers? (And has done so for years; and the Kentucky central office wouldn't let conscientious pro-life Presbyterians back out of that national insurance plan?)
People are corrupt. On a human plane, Christians can be very bad and non-Christians can be good. Peter warns believers not to "suffer as a murderer, or a thief or an evildoer or as a meddler". (1 Peter 4:15). Christians can be too arrogant and get bogged down in thinking spirituality and doing the right thing are somehow synonymous. Well, they're not according to God.
I recall the famous words to Esther from Mordecai:
It doesn't matter what Glenn Beck's religious views are or standing with God is as long as he brings about God's deliverance. God will judge Glenn Beck. Those of us who sees right from wrong should applaud Glenn for standing up to do the right thing. He is an agent of God's deliverance.
If he has never heard the word of Christ he will be judged according to his life or any other standard God chooses for those who have not heard his word.
Now, if he has heard the word of the TRUE Christ, the situation changes.
What is sad is in all the “we have to fight the Communist/Muslims/leftist then get back to religion” ranting folks are missing the point that it is this very weak approach to Christianity we have come to in the past 40 some odd years that have us facing the very battle everyone is so focused on.
If I had to guess I would say LDS...
HOWEVER...
They take the name of Christ despite carrying false doctrine, and we are called to defend his name.
They send out 50K missionary sales men to capture and ensnare people into their cult.
They call YOUR savior the brother of Satan, one of several Gods conceived through a physical sexual act between god who is a man and Mary. They tell men that they too can become gods. There are other slanders.
What if the only exposure one has to Christianity is the LDS cult? What if it turns them from God or worse turn them towards their false one since they have been using the “Christian” brand name for the past 20 odd years in their new PR assault?
Why would you, as a Presbyterian, a fine Christian tradition, turn your back as otherwise good people walk blithely through the gates of hell?
Has modern American Christianity become so terrified of the PC world that we have lost sight of our duties. Have we let Oprah set out what Christians are today?
Seems so...
You talk of celebrating your religion and others celebrate theirs. That is tolerance, a fine tradition of this Christian Nation.
However tolerance is not equity, and we have a higher duty to one who transcends nations and politics, a duty Americans took seriously at a time oddly enough where we did not face the issues we do in the age of Oprah Christianity...
