The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America accused New York officials on Tuesday of turning their backs on the reconstruction of the only church destroyed in the Sept. 11 attacks, while the controversial mosque near Ground Zero moves forward.
The sidelined project is the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, a tiny, four-story building destroyed in 2001 when one of the World Trade Center towers fell on top of it.
Nobody from the church was hurt in the attack, but the congregation has for the past decade been trying to rebuild its house of worship. While the mosque project cleared red tape earlier this month, negotiations between government officials and the church stalled last year -- and have stayed that way.
Though the particulars of the two projects are completely different and on the surface unrelated, the church and its supporters see a disconnect in the way the proposals have been handled. An archdiocese official said Tuesday that the situation has created "consternation" for those still struggling to jump-start talks over the church. "We have people that are saying, why isn't our church being rebuilt and why is there ... such concern for people of the mosque?"

Me too. I should make it go a bit faster though.
Your post says it all.
Greece is Bankrupt, Saudis are not, Follow the petrodollars funding crazy extremists.

Thank you, that was my hope and I appreciate your comment!
A second American revolution cannot come fast enough . . . and this time we make the Constitution stick.
According to George Demos, that was all a Port Authority lie. They lied again in a recent Wall Street journal article, saying "the church is free to rebuild anytime". Not true. The Port Authority has taken their land and provided them with nothing in return other than bureaucratic roadblocks.
Demos has started a petition to ask Obama to defend the rebuilding St. Nicholas Church", for everyone to sign.
I'm Orthodox (although not Greek), but I'd say this if I were a Presbyterian: If we can't stop the mosque from being built, then let's overshadow it with the biggest cross and church possible with St. Nicholas' through our donations! Even Saudi donations can't outdo a united American Christian front on this issue!
Hypocrisy!!
EXACTLY!! As much coverage as the mosque is getting, NO MENTION of this Church. Incredible!
I kind of suspected as much.

It seems to me that this site should do all it can to bring this story to light. I just did a Google News search and got a “Show all 3 stories” link t click on.
ALL 3 STORIES? You have to be kidding. This should be front page news.

Not necessarily. Several of the churches were deliberately torched (all of one was burnt EXCEPT the altar). Their ministers/deacons all said “it's not the building that makes a church, it's the people”. All that they reported on held services outside the next Sunday.
It would be extremely hard to lose St. Nicholas. As old as that church is, I imagine people have grown up in it; married in it; had their babies christened there; and their final services. Probably, generations of families have attended.
Hopefully, with the attention they are receiving, something can be done to preserve and restore the building.
This guy is trying to do the 9-11 Christian Center at Ground Zero
But Karloutsos called the Port Authority's claims "propaganda" and said the church has complied with all conditions. He said the government should honor agreements that date back to 2004, under former New York Gov. George Pataki.
Pataki, speaking with Fox News on Tuesday, agreed that the church should be rebuilt.

If this Church were any other Christian denomination other than Orthodox Christians, and if you really had a knowledge of what Eastern Christians endured in the fight against islam, your postings would not be so glib.
As a courtesy I will post a link for you to check out.
All Christian denominations must stand together in these times. This story needs more attention.
