When Emily Cooper headed off to first grade in Moody, Ala., last week, she was prepared with all the stuff on her elementary school’s must-bring list: two double rolls of paper towels, three packages of Clorox wipes, three boxes of baby wipes, two boxes of garbage bags, liquid soap, Kleenex and Ziplocs.

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the “other” articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)

The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.

It’s all in the plan, Comrades. See plank # 10 of the Communist Manifesto: “Free education for all children in government schools”

And the kids that do bring the ‘required’ items must then share with those who do NOT bring the ‘required’ items. Commie 101.

When my daughter was teaching (just one year was enough) in Chattanooga, the school allotted her $100 to purchase supplies for her first grade class. Because it was an inner city school, not many of her parents were willing/able to help. First graders need lots of supplies for hands on activities, so she found herself either buying stuff herself or finding creative ways to get it donated.

My church has adopted a local elementary school to help make sure kids have what they need. Over 80% of the students at that school are on free/reduced lunch and not all of the parents are willing/able to provide basic supplies. Yet when the principal and members of her staff came to talk with us and thank us for our partnership, I could not help but notice that half of the people who were with her were non-classroom staff.

Schools just waste huge amounts of money and don't produce a consistently good result. We really need to rethink what we are doing.

The interesting part about $10,000 per child. I have looked up private schools and found they cost half as much for tuition. I wonder if they pay for their own toilet paper.

**Yes and no. A huge amount is being funneled into the pockets of the teachers’ union. **

And the administrator’s pockets!

Um...My kids are homeschooled, so I have to ask...what happens if you tell the school, “Buy your own toilet paper, I pay taxes for that?” Do they refuse to educate the kids, ostracize them, write a stern note, what?

I can only speak for my classroom and school - I have asked my students to bring 1 three ring binder, 1 1/2 inches, 5 dividers, 500 sheets of paper and 2 dozen pencils or pens. I remind them throughout the first week of school.

After that, I go out the first weekend and purchase what is needed so that all my students have supplies. Then, I just quietly give them to each child that needs supplies. Done.
