"When I leave educational institutionalism, will I be successful or forever lost?"

A conversation with a valedictorian

Among the congratulatory plaudits and cliches passed out at the annual commencement ceremonies, one valedictory speech was delivered this spring with a refreshing twist... Forsaking the typical "first day of the rest of our lives" quotations and Dr. Seuss, Goldson chose instead to fire a clear shot across the bow of public education, a deliberately incendiary projectile from a departing star member of the ranks.

A degree from most American colleges is worth what a high school diploma is worth in Europe. Ours is a joke. The standards are low. The achievement required is low. Non-qualified individuals are given free tuition so as to fulfill race quotas. Most of the courses are useless indoctrination courses that have no value other than to create compliant little “progressives.”

Lord save us from vaguely dissatisfied children of privilege.

Did you read as far as her interest in “social justice” and Marxism as an alternative?

Non of these EDU programs work.

END THE DEPARTMENT OF EDU
From the NYP:

Head Start, the most sacrosanct federal education program, doesn’t work.

That’s the finding of a sophisticated study just released by President Obama’s Department of Health and Human Services.

Created in 1965, the comprehensive preschool program for 3- and 4-year olds and their parents is meant to narrow the education gap between low-income students and their middle- and upper-income peers. Forty-five years and $166 billion later, it has been proven a failure.

The bad news came in the study released this month: It found that, by the end of the first grade, children who attended Head Start are essentially indistinguishable from a control group of students who didn’t.

UPI
Duncan: Trying to boost funding for the proven failure.
What’s so damning is that this study used the best possible method to review the program: It looked at a nationally representative sample of 5,000 children who were randomly assigned to either the Head Start (”treatment”) group or to the non-Head Start (”control”) group

Hmm, diving into the text she comes across as a bit of a whiny socialist, no different from hundreds I have known.

But at least she’s no friend to the American Education industry - and she went courageously public about it.

I’ll answer the young lady’s question with another question:

Do you think someone indoctrinated in lies, trained in an ideology that is in opposition to truth, will ultimately be successful?

“”Our education being laughed at by foreign students was pretty sad because they would have to go home and redo that year, since they hadn’t learned enough [in the U.S. public school] to advance to the next year at their home school.”

The Wife taught our girl the Chinese method of mathematics. She thinks our schools are pitiful! Our girl was High School Valedictorian, and will start Grad School this Fall in Chemistry and Bio-Medical Engineering, at 19 years of age. I could have used the Math lessons myself, but as I don’t speak Mandarin,,,,,,,

>>”I’ll be visiting a commune - staying three weeks learning how to organically farm. I figured I would take an alternative route by visiting an alternative living environment.”<<

The selfish dimwit. It’s all about her.
If she really wanted to make a difference, she would start writing a curriculum and market it to homeschoolers. Volunteer her time tutoring the kids that ARE studying their interests. That’s the alternative living environment she is talking about, for heaven’s sake.

BUT no, she is going to organic farm. Sheesh.

I suppose they’re the same method. People may also choose to call it that, rather than “Chinese.” Whatever it’s called, it is the method taught in Chinese schools. Seems to include lots of valid, and completely accurate shortcuts.

Someone should tell the little twit that “organic” farming takes up a LOT more land to feed fewer people than non-organic farming does.

Of course, it’s not about the practicality of the issue, or even whether it works - with “liberals” and twits such as this, it’s all about what they can do to feel good about themselves.

THE pernicious lie that has caused the most damage in our world is that “people are basically good”.

Singapore Math is a curriculum in English. It’s available here.

I wish I would have started it from the beginning. It’s amazing.

Sorry if you think the european intellectuals are any different than our own.

A degree from Oxford? Good for far far left networking.

Most really successful people the world over are entrepreneurs who educate themselves and have a clear vision for the future.

A couple weeks weeding from dawn to dusk just of some stunted tomatoes would do this twit good.

Still going through her speech, but she sounds suspiciously Marxist in her line of thought. "an avant-garde tenth grade English teacher, Donna Bryan, who allowed me to open my mind and ask questions before accepting textbook doctrine" So what English doctrine was she encouraged to depart??? Proper sentence structure??? conjugating verbs??? Tense agreement??

“...A degree from Oxford? Good for far far left networking...”

Oxford is as our ivy league institutions - their science and engineering is without equal...but the lib arts faculties are largely jokes.

However (and this is a big however), there are some very, very good lib arts types there...and I’d venture that the percentage of good ones in Oxford exceed those in Harvard - which is becoming a name brand printed in chrome plated plastic.
