History was made this week in a little noticed ceremony in Washington when the U.S. Navy awarded its "Sailor of the Year" award to four women.
The Navy gave the awards, among the most prestigious for enlisted personnel, to two hospital corpsmen, Ingrid Cortez and Shalanda Brewer, Navy reservist Samira McBride and cryptologic technician Cassandra Foote. Each was promoted to chief petty officer.
At a ceremony held at the Navy Memorial, Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy Rick West, the service's highest ranking enlisted man said, according to a Navy news release:
"This is a great day for our Navy, and today we are making history with all four Sailors of the Year being women. These sailors have proven themselves as professional sailors, experts in their rates, role models to our junior sailors and youth, and most importantly, true leaders," said West.

Congratulations to the four Sailors.
Congratulations indeed...
But all four?
I detect a wee bit of PC propagandizing...
And two of them are corpsemens.
Could be true but I was happy to see that it was little noticed at least in Washington. I would find it hard to believe that it was a staged PC thing only because each Sailor goes before a different board, but crazier things have happened. That is for sure.
Glorifying women in the Navy (as well as cultural diversity) is one of CNO Roughead’s pet projects. The word has gone out to push women forward whether they are qualified or not for this kind of stuff.
In this climate, anyone who does NOT select a woman or person of color for these things had better have good reasons why. The “disadvantaged” person doesn’t have to prove they deserve anything; the person awarding anything (promotions, etc.) has to prove why they do NOT. This is the climate they have created, and those women will always be regarded as suspect recipients even if they thoroughly deserve those awards.
Without getting into the question of what it means to "deserve" these awards - I would think it bespeaks a major crisis if there is not a single man, not a single male human being, in the Navy who would deserve one.
That’s a good point; the powers that be aren’t concerned with that aspect of it. Political correctness is so prevalent in government work I don’t know why a “white” or Asian guy would even get into it (the private sector is tough enough, but if you have the skills to make money for a company you can rise above it).
You think? We all know all four of these women are the most deserving. It’s obvious the Navy is not looking for the best people. I have hard time believing that all 4 women are the best Navy SEALS (Which I am sure NONE OF THEM ARE), Fighter Pilots, Naval Ship or Sub Commander. This is freaking joke and the Navy has disgraced it’s name all to look as if they are actually fair. I have no doubt this will promote division at all levels within the Navy.
This is ridiculous.
Women have no serious business in fighting forces aside from bureaucratic, administrative and secretarial work.
PC run amok.
You know, I must say that these issues were vetted in Canada in the late 1970s, as promotions were given in the CAF based on whether a soldier was bilingual or not. There was a wave of early retirements. And so Trudeau, Canada's quintessential liberal fascist at the time ,succeeded in all but destroying the CAF, using political correctness and budget reduction. He too saw Canada's military as a colonial tool to be destroyed. He got rid of regular service regiments which were of Scottish tradition and made them into reserve units. Only now under Harper has the CAF begun its long climb out of its evolution away from being a peace corps like organization with political correctness ruling national defense.
This is the way Obama intends to demoralize and dehumanize real combat soldiers, not that this award alone would do it, it is a symptom, and indicator of the direction Obama intends to take on military culture. Obama intends to destroy our military culture, and substitute a fasist one, in which the military will become a threat to the general American populace. For Obama and his fascists, the military is a colonial military, one which exploits racial and ethnic minorities ( cannon fodder), and forwards capitalist colonialism around the world. Thus America will become weak militarily, subject to a diminution of its role in the world, and its national defense array inviting invasion from the South in particular.
Soon, the next images we may see is that such awards will have at least one open gay in the line up, to demoralize our military further.
Not so long ago Canada was presented with the image of two gay male RCMP officers in full scarlet dress, being married in Nova Scotia. SO you need to know where Obama is going with this, and the effect it will have in the future on our military.
The fascist goal is to destroy our all volunteer military and return to a draft system of national service,in which young Americans can chose national service ( Acorn Domestic Military force)or military service. That process has begun. Soon we will have young Americans patrolling our states in twos, bearing sub machine-guns, to keep order between racial and ethnic minorities, run by an ACORN like hierarchy?
You bet this is propagandizing, and this is the direction in which we are headed, according to what I have seen i Canada with a very similar historical liberal fascist evolution.
Note that I am not denegrating the service of these young women. I am denegrating the use to which they are being put as propaganda tools. No one should be standing up there on a platform as an icon of service without combat experience, male or female.I wonder which of them has that?
This is interesting. I was curious to know the raw percentages of men vs. women in the US Navy.
I found this information very difficult to find, and I looked in a lot of places. I know it has to be out there, but this information should be EASY to find.
It isn’t, and I am not a slouch at searching. Could be me on an off morning.
But, the best I could find is that 15% of the Active Duty Navy are women.
15%. And the FOUR BEST SAILORS IN THE ENTIRE US NAVY JUST HAPPEN TO BE WOMEN.
Sorry. I don’t buy it. Not in the least. Not that there aren’t women who serve with distinction, but this reeks of a push from above.
As the son of a 30 year naval vet, and having served myself in the USN, I find this type of thing damned embarrassing. I hope to God that if we ever get into a shooting war, that our operational readiness isn’t compromised because people were placed in jobs they weren’t qualified for to satisfy a PC requirement.
but how can you be so clear-thinking and eloquent so early in the morning?
crikey...i've posted "nom nom" on a thread about Obama at a sub shop...and even THAT took a cup of coffee first.
Nice to see you up and around so early Zin! I am off to do some financial stuff today and have an early start.
Just asking.
Just more “affirmative action”.
This began in full force during bubba. All promotions had merit at the bottom of the scale and gender and race at the top.
You are aware that this is an award for enlisted, and that only officers command ships or subs or fly aircraft? Or at least you would be aware if you a: had read the story, or b: ever served in the navy.
