Arizona Republican Primary: McCain 54%, Hayworth 34%
Rasmussen Reports ^ | July 25, 2010 | Rasmussen Reports

Senator John McCain has opened a 20-point lead over former Congressman J.D. Hayworth in Arizona’s Republican Senate Primary race.

The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Likely GOP Primary Voters in the state shows McCain attracting 54% of the vote, while Hayworth earns 34%.

For Hayworth, this represents another decline in support. In April, he picked up 42% of the vote. That fell to 40% in May, 36% in June and 34% in July.

But I do get the comment that has been made that he reminds a lot of people of a used car salesman,

And that is just bigotry on the part of many Arizona voters and others. J. D. is originally from North Carolina and his speech and mannerism are southern of an earlier era. I expect few Southerners think he sounds like a used car salesmen. He just has those mannerisms and is something of a throwback. Anti-Southern bigotry, but JD is far more intelligent and lucid than McCain has ever been on the issues.

But nothing explains away the political, bipolar disorder that apparently infests much of the Arizona citizenry. Who could be for their new state law, and still support McCain? Do they know nothing of the weasel's history in the Senate?

The other possibility is even more disturbing: that a majority of Arizona voters actually believe McCain's election year lies and flip/flops.

after Palin stabbed us all in the back he couldn't recover

Palin helped put a lid on the insurgency and took some of the sizzle out but Romney's endorsement carried much more political weight. Romney released a pile of money that was on the sidelines and gave the "go ahead" for the Party organizatons to kick in.

This is the presstitues just trying to proclam McLame the winner before it is decided- just like he had them do in the PRESIDENTIAL primaries.

Remember? he LOST the first few- then suddenly he won ONE of them and according to the press it was all over (and it was)

Thank you.

We will be attacked because FReepers are rightly angry at McCain and some at Palin, so they have to attack in order to vent.

However, part of the problem as I (and You) see it is that those who aren’t as hardwired as FReepers on this race have trouble seeing J.D. as their Senator because of his persona.

After all, you can grind McCain into the ground, verbally, for what he deserves given his history, but you are still stuck with a choice between McCain and J.D. Hayworth for your senator the next 6 years.

If he could carry his own water effectively (great debator, but he’s not seen as very likable or trustworthy), then neither McCain nor Palin could stand in his way.

Put somebody else up (hypothetically) and McCain would be more beatable because he is vulnerable.

People say it’s money. Ok, I’ll buy that he is severely disadvantaged which doesn’t help, but people have won under those conditions before. If he doesn’t, it is HIM not anyone else who couldn’t carry the day.

Glad at least one other person will say that besides me and endure the resulting flame wars (which will be one-sided because I have so much to do, to surviving each day, that keeps me away from that stuff).

“This may well be a taste of what Nov. will be..much anger now but by then they will forget.....”

I don’t believe that for a second.

Uh no. There has never been any concerted effort to have Democrats register as Republicans to vote for McCain.

There has never been any need to.

Rasmussen.

So you think he might have polled only McCain staffers?

Um, sorry, you endorse evil it rubs off on you. She has very poor judgement.

Evil? Come on. Give it a rest, will you? What is this, your tenth anti-Palin post? The voters or Arizona are responsible for their own votes. If you want to go on a post rampage, blame them.

And just imagine the manure that would have gone flying had Palin not endorsed McCain. You don't blame someone for a sense of gratitude and for making the best out of a very sticky situation. Then again, maybe you do.

Larry Sabato laid it all out this morning.

If the election were now......

The Republicans are not going to have the great victory many believe and will make some gains but not enough to end the Rat destruction.

Don’t blame everyone else but J.D. if the voters don’t “cotten” to him.

Well, nevermind, I guess you’ll blame anyone you choose.

I don’t think they believe McCain. I think they harbor a little bit of hope that he will listen to the Tea Partiers and Republicans who insist on border security and no amnesty.

But they can’t see J.D. as their Senator for 6 yrs, looks like, perhaps...

I expect betrayal from Romney. Palin's betrayal knocked me for a loop since I supported her so heavily during the campaign and after.

I live here, I watched what happened to many conservatives who decided maybe something was going on that they didn’t know about and they had better back McCain because Palin wouldn’t betray them. So don’t tell me.

Well, first of all, let me say that I hope J.D. wins. I can't stand McCain. But, let me ask you and McGavin999 this....

Did all you Palin-haters give J.D. a pass on pimping for a free grant at taxpayers expense on an infomercial like some carnival hawker? Huh? Huh? Huh?

The only thing that eliminated Robert Byrd was old age.

Same for mccain. McCain has the 65+ zombie set who vote for mccain no matter what.

I quit paying any attention to Larry Sabato a long time ago. His predictions are worse than Dick Morris’ and he’s developed a liberal slant. What station did you see him on; MSNBC?

Don’t blame everyone else but J.D. if the voters don’t “cotten” to him.

You think those same voters will still "cotten" to McCain when he abandons his new tough on illegal immigration stance and becomes Senator Amnesty again, maybe before the end of 2010? Who will the voters blame then? Something is very bizarre about a state that supports their new immigration law, along with a senator who has done as much as any other American to enable the continuation of illegal immigration.

"They're all God's children".

The old McCain will be back soon if the voters can't shake their bipolar disorder.

To answer you question yes we did

Simple fact is, we watched him being ramrodded out of congress because he supported securing the borders and was against Bush/McCain/Kennedy's "comprehensive immigration reform". We watched his district being adjusted oh so slightly to include the very liberal ASU area. Oh! My! How do you suppose that happened? We watched the big money coming in here to make sure that JD lost, so yeah, I give him a pass on doing what had to be done to earn money to support his family. You see, he's not a rich guy who married the kid of a mobster.
