Roughly 50 men and women in the Warsaw Ghetto chose a special form of resistance. In a secret archive, they documented their path to doom for future generations, chronicling the Nazis' crimes as they were being perpetrated.
David Graber was 19 when he hurriedly scribbled his farewell letter. "I would be overjoyed to experience the moment when this great treasure is unearthed and the world is confronted with the truth," he wrote.
While German soldiers combed the streets outside, Graber and his friend Nahum Grzywacz buried 10 metal boxes in the basement of an elementary school on Nowolipki Street in Warsaw's Jewish ghetto. It was Aug. 2, 1942.

and rancrous. It was shocking to read your remark in that context.
It is quite clear that one cannot survive long on 184 calories. But for how long can you survive on 699 calories? And, if you do, what state of health could you expect. Horrible, just horrible. No matter how much I've read and what I've heard, details such as this pain me.
When I was a kid I knew a Dutch couple that met in a German concentration camp. When they were liberated, the husband - a tall six foot three inch man - weighed 90 some pounds. His wife told me that her smoking habit helped keep her alive - she held off the terror by her endless search for thrown away cigarette butts...
Somehow, all of us need to figure out a way to stop the type of evil that grew and festered in Germany. Understand it - know the soil - know how to stop it... It's not that we talk about the Holocaust too much - it's that we don't talk about it enough.
Shalom.
The problem is that the Communist Soviet archives were only briefly opened... and V.V.Putin is closing them back again. We were able to get all the German archives.
Communist tyranny was horrible, and Communist apologists I fear will burn in Hell lest they repent. It’s not so much a preference against Germans and for Soviets... its availability. Germany is a free society today; Russia is only partly free.
I think the end goal was to destroy the entire world and everyone in it. I don’t think the Nazis realized that Hitler wanted to kill them too. Hitler wanted to kill everyone and perhaps eventually himself.
What? You must be antisemitic to make such a suggestion. /s
“The German people knew what was happening - their hands as dirty as the SS...”
Impossible for them to now know what was going on. So many of them were taught it was a glorious thing to kill the Jews, to rat out their parents, to selfishly turn in their own friends. To go about robbing and assaulting people who were ‘undesirable.’ And they attended the rallies, joined the clubs, enjoyed jitterbug dancing when they weren’t getting bombed and enjoyed the loot taken from the Jewish families.

“Do you think Hitler would go through all of that trouble of eliminating all European Jews, and leave them to flourish here in the US?”
Nope, but since he never came close to beating the US, it’s a moot point.

If you find that shocking you might want to read anymore about things like the Holocaust.
Well thanks to Pearl Harbor. And the Germans wound up declaring war on us anyway, in the hopes that in return the Japs would help the Nazis against the Soviet Union.
Not that Hitler wouldn’t have tried.
Yes.
Hitler would have tried. He never got the opportunity. Thank God for that.
Hitlers recruitment efforts benefited from the fear and revulsion of the German public against the Bolshevik riots of the early 20s and the Ukrainian Holodomor of the early 30s. Nazi propaganda was initially anti-Bolshevik but increasingly became anti-Jewish as the public saw little difference. German awareness and empathy for the Holodomor was heightened by proximity to the Ukraine while British and American opinion embraced Uncle Joe Stalin. Communists had infiltrated our government and press, epitomized by Walter Duranty, the Pulitzer Prize-winning journo for the NY Times, who did his best to mislead audiences by covering-up Soviet atrocities. After the White Russian campaigns of 1918-1919, western democracies lost interest in overthrowing communism with the consequence that those who wanted to protect their religion, their business, their property, their homes, their family and their own lives turned to the only countervailing force available: Nazism. Ironically, Marx predicted this development in his theory of Dialectical Materialism by which movements call into existence opposing forces. Shades of todays politics? Obama and his Press vs. the Tea Party?

Hitler knew this would not play well with the industrialists that he needed to build his war machine. The theory is that Hitler purged the SA to gain support of the Army, while true, the other side was knocking off the SA gave him the support he needed from the German industrialists.
I was thinking about "righting the wrong" as I was writing this.
That's the one I thought was referred to as "the Uprising." Many thanks for pointing out this significant difference. I should read up on the Polish Ghetto Uprising.
Thank you very much for your kind words.
The distribution of good people and evil people is probably very similar from country to country - but who's “running the show” that's the difference.
In this country we have “a hitler” or a few hundred - he's working in some gas station because he keeps getting fired from good jobs... and we have “thomas Jefferson” - he's clerking in some library or bookstore...
At this point in our history we're keeping out the Stalin's and Hitler's and Thomas Jefferson's and the George Washington's. But it could tip if incentives for “who runs” isn't watched. Systems that propel monsters to the top have common incremental incentives... We're closer than I'm comfortable with with on some of those incentives...
Well put.
