Here is a man whose every word and deed is easily explicable once you know the single essential thing about him: He is a member of a fascist splinter group that believes it is the salvation of the Catholic Church.
This schismatic crackpot sect is headed by Mel Gibson's father, Hutton Gibson, a nutty autodidact with a sideline in Holocaust denial.
Like many ultra-conservative Catholics, the Gibsons, père et fils, have never forgiven the Vatican for lifting the charge of deicide against the Jews in 1964.
Less well-remembered, perhaps, is the interview in which he announced that his wife of many years and the mother of his children would not, alas, be able to join him in paradise.
It was not a matter of her moral character. It was simply that she had not seen fit to join the one true church.
Her condemnation, then, was "a pronouncement from the chair."
Gibson has now traded in this long-suffering ladyhopelessly rupturing his sacred marriage vowsfor another, younger one, who, to phrase it delicately, was almost certainly not picked for her salient Catholic virtues.
In doing this, he must have had a consciousness, however dim, of having endangered his immortal soul.

That is an opinion about his father’s motives but Mel Gibson is the subject of the thread and the subject of the draft dodging accusation so it is irrelevant what his father did or why.
When I googled Hitchens, I came across a photo of him at his baptism in 1949. All the men were dressed in military uniforms.
LOL. Many of the so-called “ultra conservative” sect of Catholicism denies the Holocaust, are truthers on 9-11, thinks the new Mass of Vatican II is invalid, and (some of them) think the chair of St. Peter is currently vacant.
They are apparently so conservative that they’re not conservative at all.
I have to say, the notion of Christopher Hitchens attacking anyone for misbehaving in their personal lives is about the ultimate in hypocrisy.
I thought it was illegal to tape private conversations and then release them to wide media play in order to harm another person. The fact that there is no outrage at this violation of civil liberties astounds me. This fact alone suggests that a different set of standards is being applied in Mel Gibson’s case, acceptance of which could lead to future abuses.
Hitchens would go on to support Barack Obama, calling McCain “senile”, and his choice of running mate Sarah Palin “absurd”, calling Palin a “pathological liar” and a “national disgrace”.

It is possible that these tapes won’t be admissible in court.
Your last statement is true-That Mel himself was too young to be considered a draft dodger. I posted privately because my one word answer may be confusing to someone else following the thread. No big deal.
Cheers!
That sounds awfully existential. Are those folks even sure that they exist? lol
That statement is true. There is no rational refutation of that.
Some of Hubby's family moved to America so they wouldn't be drafted to fight Napoleon. Were they draft dodgers?
I think that we are better off with the system that we have now. Anyone who joins is a true Patriot.
Thanks
Well, when there is no draft, there are no dodgers. You’re right about that. It probably is better that way...as long as there’s a sufficient amount of recruits to fill the need at any given time.
Btt
Yep. And children aren’t responsible for their parents actions. Before they went to Australia, I believe they went to Ireland where Gibsons mother was born. I know they ended up in Ireland at some point.
Are you calling Mel's dad irrational? Because there's definitely no rational refutation to that either. : )
