Here is a man whose every word and deed is easily explicable once you know the single essential thing about him: He is a member of a fascist splinter group that believes it is the salvation of the Catholic Church.
This schismatic crackpot sect is headed by Mel Gibson's father, Hutton Gibson, a nutty autodidact with a sideline in Holocaust denial.
Like many ultra-conservative Catholics, the Gibsons, père et fils, have never forgiven the Vatican for lifting the charge of deicide against the Jews in 1964.
Less well-remembered, perhaps, is the interview in which he announced that his wife of many years and the mother of his children would not, alas, be able to join him in paradise.
It was not a matter of her moral character. It was simply that she had not seen fit to join the one true church.
Her condemnation, then, was "a pronouncement from the chair."
Gibson has now traded in this long-suffering ladyhopelessly rupturing his sacred marriage vowsfor another, younger one, who, to phrase it delicately, was almost certainly not picked for her salient Catholic virtues.
In doing this, he must have had a consciousness, however dim, of having endangered his immortal soul.

How does a father’s decision reflect on a 12 yr old’s character? It was still impossible to dodge a draft that didn’t exist when he was 18 anyway.
Especially when they have nothing to lose, given advancing throat cancer, surgery and chemotherapy. I'll pray for his soul, once he is silenced and meets his Maker.
I know about the father, or any father having reasons for a major move, but Mel was never old enough to be a part of the Vietnam war draft, even he had lived in the US.
The claim that Mel was a draft dodger is just more of that fake nonsense that creeps post on the internet.
The claim was that Mel Gibson was a draft dodger, that is a lie.
Ditto's!
It's about money. Interested people will get the story from CNN if Fox doesn't give the story.
yes
With the exceptions of abortion and gay marriage, the Catholic Church is a leftwing, not rightwing outfit.
The sheer idiocy of Hitchens makes “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” look amatuerish......
Scary is right ... Especially with people like Obama at the helm.
It’s likely that Big Brother can track us on the internet.
You’re very welcome...
...cancer of the esophagus...
That being said, Mel's character doesn't appear to fall all that far from the apple tree, imho. (Let's please agree to disagree and leave it at that.)
Christopher Hitchens, eh?
I wonder it Hitchens ever considered a name change.....
It’s really amazing what passes for the thought processes of an atheist.
He’s giving Dawkins a real run for his money in paranoia.
Well, it wasn’t my post you replied to but there is nothing to disagree about. He could not have dodged the draft because no draft existed when he turned 18. That is not an opinion that is a fact. I don’t really care what your personal opinion of him is.
What is true? Why don’t you just post on the thread rather than freepmail?
By moving his family abroad Mel’s dad clearly intended for all his sons (including Mel, if he were to become eligible) to dodge the draft. I agree, that a 12yr old Mel bears no responsibility for this.
