Exactly. People with no concept of equine psychology could have blown a vuvuzela horn at them—or somebody could have thrown a firecracker. I hope the police get to the bottom of it. These horses wouldn’t have stampeded over children unless they were terrified. Whoever set them off should be identified, and if it was done with malice, prosecuted.
Horses are big and powerful and can do a lot of damage.

Boy I sure hate hearing things like this, but the truth is, horses are dangerous animals with the fight or flight instinct. I just hope people don’t go on a rampage trying to outlaw horses from participation - they are inherently dangerous - but what the heck isn’t?
I read the article and it states that it was a team of horses; one horse was rubbing his head on the other and slipped the bridle off. Eeek! As a driver of draft horses, I can relate to the situation and have seen this happen before. I never let my horses rub against each other in harness for that very reason, and they MUST have proper-fitting equipment that cannot possibly be rubbed off. I also have the horses checked-up so they can’t lower their heads enough to be a danger.
Parades are a huge challenge for all horses. We ride our draft horses in the Tournament of Roses Parade and this year our group was right in front of the Honda float that fired off a canon every 2 minutes. Because we take a lot of time to season our horses before a huge parade, we usually have the edge off, but it’s always a risk and we never fool ourselves that ‘nothing will ever happen.’ Get passive, get killed.
My God I hope those people are okay - I feel terrible for the kids involved. Prayers that all survive with no permanent damage, bless their hearts.
Not sure I’m buying this. It’s convenient, isn’t it, to find one of the horses wholly at fault. I have never yet seen a horse get its bridle out of place and break into a blind panic.

Did you ever hear the story about how Will Rogers broke into show biz big time? He was a participant in a vaudeville rodeo [Madison Square Gardens], and a steer jumped the railing and headed up into the stands. Will jumped the railing on his horse, lassoed the steer and calmed it. The rest is history.
Pants were not invented until the horse was domesticated. They (pants) were necessary to straddle the horses back.

Shame really if it is true. I hope the owners have insurance. I would assume they do, but it is going to hurt.

I wish we knew what breed the horses were. Some breeds spook more easily than others. The one I had that was the worst was half Arabian half Appaloosa. Someone else might have the same mix, and have a very calm horse. Mine was a firecracker on a short fuse. She broke me in more places than I care to remember. Anyway, like you I hope the insurance is gold-plated. This is a very tragic situation, and I pray the injured heal quickly and fully.
