Breaking: General Stanley McChrystal tenders his resignation
A senior Capitol Hill source tells me that General Stanley McChrystal had tendered his resignation to President Barack Obama and that the White House is actively discussing a replacement who could be quickly confirmed by the Senate.
The source said that among the names being touted as possible successors are General James Mattis, the outgoing head of the US Joint Forces Command and due to retire after being passed over as US Marine Corps commander, and Lieutenant General William Caldwell, commander of Natos Training Mission in Afghanistan.
Of course, offering to resign is not the same as actually resigning and it remains to be seen whether Mr Obama will accept the resignation.

"I won't be satisfied until these fine young men and women are appropriately trained to follow my example and bow to foreign potentates."
Since when does the Senate have to “confirm” a military reassignment, or are they talking about needing their approval to give the new guy his fourth star? And it’s Marine Corps Commandant, not commander. Even as an E-1 and on up I worked mostly with flag officers (generals and admirals - both American and foreign) so this seems like an intentional thing to me, with McChrystal trying to hint around to us that Dear Leader is a naked emperor.
And how can you logically argue McCain was the better candidate?
We would still be full on towards Socialism, just not as fast...yea, that is better, I see!
The President does not need Senate approval to apoint a new commander in Afganistan. If he gives the gey another star then that goes to the Senate. Article written by a dumb forner.
Yon has also been on McChrystal's case for a while. I think Yon overstressed some of the gripes and let his personal feelings get in the way, but McChrystal also appears to have messed up on more than just the article. Apparently, front line troops have had problems with the command and ops.
Still, I believe that the Senate does confirm all officer appointments, even though it's a mainly rubber-stamp.
That would be great but don't hold your breath. You can bet that the General's salary and benefits will be used as leverage: "if you say one word of anything to the public, you can kiss your military pension and bennys goodbye."
I have never said that, but now that you brought it up. I did vote for mccain because he was the lesser of two evils, and that was before palin proved to be a rino. I seriously doubt he would have been anywhere near as corrupt as obumber is.
Er... how sure are we on this, actually. The linked blog post is a bit old and I’m not sure we’re really going to no anything until tomorrow (or today, depending on your time zone).
If Obama accepts the resignation, that’ll be the second commander of the Afghanistan security force that Obama has replaced. Obama came into office after years of bashing the Iraqi war effort, saying that Afghanistan was the right war to fight. But the Afghanistan effort is collapsing under his presidency, under the weight of the simple fact that Obama really doesn’t want to fight or win this war.
McChrystal is being cashiered.
This whole thing is a dog and pony show.
This has nothing to do with ‘betting one’s bars’ (or stars).
I believe this to be repercussion to Lakin into the dungeon issue.
Yep. Here’s the link to his current missive:

Is McCrystal the best man for the job or isn’t he?
If he is, it is disgusting they are replacing him.
