Breaking: General Stanley McChrystal tenders his resignation

A senior Capitol Hill source tells me that General Stanley McChrystal had tendered his resignation to President Barack Obama and that the White House is actively discussing a replacement who could be quickly confirmed by the Senate.

The source said that among the names being touted as possible successors are General James Mattis, the outgoing head of the US Joint Forces Command and due to retire after being passed over as US Marine Corps commander, and Lieutenant General William Caldwell, commander of Nato’s Training Mission in Afghanistan.

Of course, offering to resign is not the same as actually resigning and it remains to be seen whether Mr Obama will accept the resignation.

Any comments on McCrystal?

I think people are missing the point. Consider that “the insurgency” is our current administration. McChrystal has felt the moral obligation, at the risk of his military career, to “COIN” Obama. Barry is now in a difficult position; keeping McChrystal will show him as weak. Canning McChrystal will further hurt us in Afghanistan and will create a potential political adversary in 2012.

I’ve never, in 26 years of Military Service, ever, heard a General Officer, speak off the cuff.

Apparently the reporter was given access to McChrystal for 30 days. IIRC that is unprecedented. Over that period of time it would be very easy to momentarily let your guard down a few times.

I have trouble believing that McChrystal would voluntarily allow a reporter 30 days access. It had to be on orders from Obama. Also, McChrystal may have decided that since they were forcing him to give that much access, he would REALLY give them access and let the cards fall where they may.

Obama is a marxist, muslim, arrogant pussy who needs to be impeached, tried for treason and shipped to Gitmo to rot with his muslim buddies.

I have been rooting for General Stan, but find it quite disturbing that he seems to be a dirty Democrat, sorry!

Worked at The Kennedy School for a time and then did time at The Council on Foreign Relations, both in NY. Seems to be accurate that he voted for Obama?? If this is true it`s hard for me to get excited about him.

For sure the most important thing is the troops on the ground! If Stan the man is the best there is, then he should stay.

How could a decent man vote for Obama?? Voting for Barry to be the Commander N Chief is not something a good man would do.

Maybe throw the bum out? Now he has something going for him in that he seems to have trashed Barry, probably everything in the article is true, but still, how could a decent man vote for Obama???

Especially after the things Obama has said about the military....bombing civilians and killing women and children etc.

Obama is FILTH, and anybody that voted for him is also!!

I think that was the General’s way of taking advantage of an opportunity to make a career move. As the RS piece says, when he met w/Obozo he knew O had no idea who he was. A look at his background tells the story.

There is extensive coverage, documentation and analysis of the Haditha trials in the Free Republic archives, including a great deal from Freepers who were actually on the scene in the courtroom, some with extensive contacts within the cast of players, so to speak.

When Mattis was assigned as presiding officer it was viewed throughout the ranks as a good sign because of his reputation for fairness and honor. That is what made his betrayal so shocking.

I will add one further comment. Several months ago I said in another thread that both Petraeus and McChrystal needed to bail from their positions in Afghanistan because Obama was setting them up as fall guys and scapegoats for a deliberately sabotaged and doomed policy there.

The same goes for Mattis - if he’s so blinded by his career ambition that he takes this job he’s a fool who deserves the humiliation history will accord him for “losing”. Unfortunately, our military personnel who will have to die while this debacle plays out don’t deserve it.

The Stone interview spells out his attitude well as a renegade who would have it his way. And he got away with it. I think he saw the futility of his efforts, that they would no longer play out to his satisfaction and perhaps he was just ready to get out of Afganistan.

Well, God bless the general and his family - now he is FREE - and let’s pray for the next “victim” the Obamanator chooses and hope he/she can overcome the crap they will have to endure....and pray for our troops who are in harm’s way...

Man, good to know I’m not the only one thinking THIS!
It went down all too predictably - since when does a gen off go blab to Rolling Stone? Too suspicious...but I still feel for him and his family....

About a year ago a local radio host now retired predicted the military taking over the white house due to incompetence by a future president. He may be closer to that prediction than he thought.
