Breaking: General Stanley McChrystal tenders his resignation

A senior Capitol Hill source tells me that General Stanley McChrystal had tendered his resignation to President Barack Obama and that the White House is actively discussing a replacement who could be quickly confirmed by the Senate.

The source said that among the names being touted as possible successors are General James Mattis, the outgoing head of the US Joint Forces Command and due to retire after being passed over as US Marine Corps commander, and Lieutenant General William Caldwell, commander of Nato’s Training Mission in Afghanistan.

Of course, offering to resign is not the same as actually resigning and it remains to be seen whether Mr Obama will accept the resignation.

“The generals in a MACOM have a political officer assigned to them”

They also have lawyers. Both of which mean this was calculated. The interview was coordinated by one of the civilian staffers.

What was her name? And is it even remotely possible she might be skulking around the fringes getting ready to punce again, and people are getting ready to support her?

Funny you should ask...the Friends just teased a segment asking--would Mrs. Clinton make a better Commander-in-Chief???

I still cannot get my arms around this situation. I don’t know the General. I don’t know what is going on in Afghanistan right now, other than accounts I can read.

I am perfectly willing to entertain the concept that the General is playing an elaborate game of chess against someone used to playing checkers, and who is willing to sacrifice his career to prevent a debacle in Afghanistan.

I am even willing to consider that he never voted for Obama as he said he did, and that there is some byzantine reason for his saying so.

But if not, even if McChrystal never said anything himself, if he allowed his subordinates to display open insubordination in the presence of a weasel from Rolling Stone without having some kind of motive, this is simply poor leadership and bad judgement on its face.

Given his record, I simply am having a difficult time reconciling his actions.

I don’t play chess anymore, so I could be missing something on his part, and I will willingly concede that is possible.

I wish that it were indeed calculated. I would be comforted to think that he has rationale to explain this in a satisfactory way, other than poor judgement.

See my previous post...

My McChrystal Ball tells me this is far from over. He may WANT to resign, to be free to tell America, as a RETIRED General Officer, what is really going on.

Remember what happened with Ollie North. Everybody thought he was dead meat until he stood up to Congress. All of a sudden, he was a national hero.

It ain't over till the Fat lady sings, and Ms. Napolitano is way too busy ensuring our Southern border is OPEN to Mexicans to be taking singing lessons.

It's also an indictment of Obama that his hand-picked choice to lead the effort said this out loud.

Also another indictment of the MSM how they pick to denounce McChrystal and take the White House side.

How about Obama's mentor, adviser and close friend Bill Ayers?

He has experience organizing attacks on military targets.

In 1977, while Major General Singlaub was chief of staff of U.S. forces in South Korea, he publicly criticized President Jimmy Carter’s decision to withdraw U.S. troops from the Korean peninsula. On March 21, 1977, Carter relieved him of duty for overstepping his bounds and failing to respect the President’s authority as Commander-in-Chief. This was a little before your time, but just as big. We both know Carter was wrong!!!

>> It has been said the general voted for Obama...

So apparently did many other “Conservatives”. Wonder why he didn’t support McCain/Palin. Maybe he “voted” for Obama to demonstrate unity. Who knows.

General McChrystal either is more tone deaf than Obama and has no sense of judgement or he wanted out. However, if he wanted out, there were better ways to do it than like this. Hope all those on his staff enjoy retirement also. What’s the chances of Foxnews picking him up as a military analyst to get interviewed by O’Reilly, Beck and Hannity? I’d make sure I’m watching....

"any front line combat arms soldiers in the photo?"

I think I can answer that. It appears to have been taken in the rotunda of the Al Faw Palace, Camp Victory, Baghdad. In which case the troops would have come from Camp Victory, Liberty and possibly Camp Slayer. There's a good chance some convoy personnel are included however none of the 3 bases are FOBs or what you would call front line. Personally, I wouldn't want to discredit them. We had some super fine people over there.

Shinseki speaks out about troop levels needed for invading Iraq, he's a hero and patriot. McChrystal speaks out and he's evil. Yup, same MSM...

Hard to blame him. Working for that marxist quisling had to be taxing.

No kidding. He'll have to retire from the Army too before he can speak his mind, right?

Supposedly, McChrystal voted for “that Marxist quisling”. If so, he needs to leave.

If Mattis takes it, that would be great. He ain’t no perfumed prince, that is a fact.

You need to do more research on Mattis. He'd be a great choice, for Obama that is, and would fit right in with Obama's agenda to grind down our military and lose Afghanistan.

Of course he's no perfumed prince, and up until recently he had an outstanding career and was universally admired and respected by all ranks. Then he threw it all away and dishonored himself by his shameful actions in the Haditha Marines trials.

He demonstrated that he's more than willing to throw his men under the bus to advance his career, so yes, he's just the type of general Obama needs: a widely accepted public reputation for excellence (by the uninformed) to give the regime cover, but a deeply flawed character willing to put his career ahead of his men.
