I’m not so sure the country would be behind a major troops buildup in Afghanistan at this point. Obama could score points by holding the line.

The ROE suck in Afghanistan

Mainly because of Obama and his ineptitude, never mind his love of moslems and their religion of murder.

McChry was smart to resign and he should only stay on if Obama and his anti-war anti-American advisers allow him free reign to conduct a real war with winning strategies.

Shut up and act like a leader, community organizer vacation addicted Barack Hussein.

If Obama accepts McChrystal’s resignation, I would interpret that as probably meaning Obama has decided to surrender Afghanistan.

McChrystal’s plan on counterinsurgency strategy, with its emphasis on minimizing civilian casualties and winning over local populations, is I think the only robust strategy for waging war in Afghanistan that Obama would sign on to.

Obama would never agree to a war plan in which the military forces were authorized to simply go in and obliterate the taliban, with all of the civilian casualties that would entail.

Biden’s plan to have counter-terror strike forces in country available to go after a designated nests of terrorists from time to time would have little effect, and they would end up being observers as the taliban took over control of most of the country and once again made it a relatively safe haven for jihadis the world over.

I think giving a deadline for withdrawal emboldened the taliban, and that if Obama accepts McChrystal’s resignation he will blame the failure of the war on McChrystal, and pull out most of the troops at his deadline. It could be a replay of Vietnam where the Democrats pulled the plug on the South Vietnamese and left them to the tender mercies of their communist enemy.

The most important thing for Obama is assigning blame, and making sure none of it falls on him. You can be sure that how to assign blame for failure in Afghanistan is topic number one for Obama and his advisors in discussing the war effort.

If true, good move by McChrystal. Essentially, he got the truth out there. The Punk-in-Chief deeply humiliated the General during his interminable “deliberations” re troop numbers for the Afghan. McChrystal found his vindication via the interview. Barack Hussein is too stupid and full of himself to know not to mess with a military leader’s honor.

McChrystal had to find a way to quit before he had to be the man to turn off the lights. So he picks a fight with OBozo and get himself fired. Now some other poor slob has to go down in the record books as the general who lost the war in Afghanistan.

I'm beginning to think that's a possibility. For some reason, even though I didn't particularly like McChrystal because of those inane ROE, I feel particularly disturbed by the fact that he is leaving.

He probably was ethical and certainly, unlike his boss, did not hate the US. And now we're at the mercy of the alien in the WH.

I wish him well. A salute to him and his efforts. I hope he can speak freely now.

Did McChrystal plan the whole thing?

Had to be planned - every West Point Cadet knows what happened between MacArthur and Truman ...

By giving the interview [and saying what he did], McChrystal knew that he was gonna have to resign or be fired ...

BTW: Servicemen should not publically disagree with policy - they are taught to respect the office [if not the man]. If feeling compelled to speak out - they should resign first. They are then free to speak their minds ...

Why would he abandon his soldiers to “The wimps in the White House” until he absolutely had to? Every minute they are under McChrystal’s command, they’re safe from Obama.

Zero does not give a damn what happens in Afghanistan. He sees the resources being out into there as a diversion from his plans to Euro-style welfare state. The only reason he has not "cut and run" yet is the potential the electoral fallout.

I hope Klein is correct, and that McChrystal has resigned. I also hope McC. doesn’t get talked out of this, and that he speaks out publicly about these silly rules of engagement, and the futility of running the war from the executive office, as was done in Vietnam.

This is the best way, in my humble opinion, for McC. to stand up for our soldiers. They have, and are, putting their lives on the line for a lost cause at this point, thanks to resident Jughead.

Statement: "Breaking: Joe Klein on CNN just said McChrystal has submitted his resignation!"

Response: A resignation may be a smart move.

Comment: Lord! The cost of living in a dying civilization. The fact that words, their usage and their implicit meaning are more important than actual events leaves one having to speculate at what is happening.

Well based on what I have heard here I would never support the guy. As an old solder he could just fade away, or he could take the advice of Nancy Pelosi and become another liberal artist. ;-)

Maybe this is McC.’s way of standing up for his troops. He knows that the policy coming from D.C. will get more of them killed, unless someone falls on his sword to get the word out, indirectly, that the Obama policy is a total flop.

In the article by Michael Hastings, an aide describes McChrystal as “disappointed” by his first Oval Office meeting with President Barack Obama, whom he considered unprepared. It goes on to say that even though McChrystal voted for Obama, the two never clicked. And McChrystal is quoted as saying that he found it “painful” when the president reprimanded him last fall for speaking openly about his desire for more troops in Afghanistan.
