At the end of April members of the White House press corps began to speak out against a perceived lack of access to the president. Now White House correspondents are facing a whole new type of access issue: Their travel budgets have fallen off, making it harder for them to keep up with the president.
The number of charter flights for reporters to follow the president on trips has sharply declined in recent months, according to The New York Times. Last year the press spent a total of $18 million on such travel arrangements.
Only a dozen reporters are allowed to accompany the president on Air Force One; everyone else--those correspondents "outside the bubble"--traditionally charter a flight together. With news budgets tight, however, reporters are having to fly commercial days in advance, take buses or miss trips altogether.
The decision of whether or not to charter a plane comes down to a vote between the five major networks ABC, CBS, CNN, Fox News and NBC and Edwin Chen, president of the White House Correspondents' Association, who gets two votes on behalf of all the other reporters.
Things are tighter than ever at the news networks. ABC News recently cut 300 jobs, and CBS and CNN are considering a partnership, which would allow them to share news-gathering resources.
The sole reason is money, Mr. Chen told The Times.
You've whored yourself so poor that you're going to have to stick with the Wee Wee's teleprompter script and the DNC's talking points ... same as always
Exactly...the “press” is part and parcel of the Obama campaign...suspect that some were on the take in ‘08...others just wanted Barry in...now they got him.
Their job is to shill for the bastard, not make demands of him.
I don’t see how this can possibly affect any news watcher.
With 0bama’s in-house press corp/network offering stories and videos for outside purview, we are getting the exact coverage we had with NBC/CBS/etc., but without the added spin of their news division.
As I watch the new “V” series, I am absolutely amazed at how the behaviors we know to be liberal are all shown to be on the bad side of everything.
Dictators have no friends; only sacrifices.
"You can't ask me any real questions, and I won't tell you any real answers."
That’s what the Internet and Freeper correspondents are for.
What’s the big deal? The White House has been writing your stories since before he took office.
Travel should cost you nothing....
Why doesn’t the media just eliminate all their White House reporters? All they have to do is reprint the spoon-fed news releases from the WH as they have been doing. It’s not as if they (the mainstream media) have anybody on their staff that practices journalism.
There hasn’t been a formal WH Presidential press conference since July 22, 2009.
Watch for a line item secreted in a bill that will cover the cost of the chartered airplane so all can accompany Obama, and therefore also be under his thumb.
This is called "creating jobs".
Only freepers can apply. Most can write with flair and they know how to spell "strategery".
They will tell the truth and won't pad their time sheets.
Most importantly, freepers are EVERYWHERE, even overseas.
Just put your lying lips together and whistle.....and they will come.
Problem solved.

I think it is time we, the taxpayer, limited 0dumbo’s travel.
I have the solution! Just hook a WWII glider behind Air Force One and cut the cord before it lands. The reporters glide in to the airport or some farmer’s field, grab their bicycles (going green!) and proceed to Dear Leader’s photo op/speech/teachable moment or whatever.
Why would they need to go along, they just print or report what he wants them too.
And why bother? It's not as if the spoon-fed White House press corps is capable of asking a pointed question. Also, they were so much in the tank for Obama during the campaign that none of them will ever admit that they were wrong by suddenly doing their damn jobs.
They should all get laid off. Who needs them? It would be very fitting indeed.
I tend to agree, but the more time the Kenyan spends away from DC, the better off we are.
Same is true for Pelousy and all other low-life Congress critters.
last press conference was..? 10 months ago?
