Arizona passes law banning multilingual requirement for businesses

Arizona did it again! Fresh from signing a law that reinforces a federal law giving police the right to ask a person stopped by police for an unrelated matter to produce papers proving the right to be legally in the US, followed by a law banning schools from teaching minority/ethnic studies courses advocating separatism, group superiority and subversion of this country, Arizona Governor Jan Brewer (R) signed

legislation affirming that nothing in state law requires businesses to provide "trained and competent" interpreters when a customer comes in speaking a language other than English. Assistant Attorney General Michael Walker said that has probably always been the law.

If it was always the law, why the need for this law? Because of a lawsuit of course. A unilingual Spanish speaking woman in Arizona was treated by a unilingual English speaking optometrist in his Arizona office. The woman's underage 12 year old daughter offered to be the interpreter; fearing legal, insurance and medical problems if the child misunderstood the optometrist refused, asking the mother and child to return with an English speaker over 18 or alternatively, visit some Spanish speaking optometrists. Instead, the Spanish speaker, whether legally in this country or not, understood enough of this country to file a discrimination suit against the English speaking optometrist. Refusing to settle, the optometrist finally won after the Arizona Attorney General took a year to decide no laws had been broken.

I’ve been trying to fill out my California primary election ballot. It’s now totally English/Spanish and it’s a real PITA to try to unscramble the two. The way the type is set both languages are given equal prominence. Go Arizona!!

I hadn’t heard of the above law. I’m assuming it was passed by the Legislature and then signed by the Governor. Am I correct? If so, I want to see it replicated by EVERY state.

I was very disappointed in Laura Bush on her views on gay marriage and abortion. The boycott is backfiring. I believe what Arizona is doing will be replicated through out the nation. We are at a definite crossroad in this country. Are we going to sit idly by while secular humanists, socialists and communists try to destroy this country? We must turn the tide or I'm afraid it's bye bye Miss American Pie.

While it is good that Arizona no longer REQUIRES bilingual languages for business, it is still profitable to have a few Spanish speakers on staff for Spanish speaking customers, the same way as it is good business to have Navajo speakers on hand in NE Arizona.

Wonder how this would work in New Mexico as the “official” languages are English and Spanish.

If you can’t speak English, you shouldn’t be able to vote in this country.

I AM FOURTH GENERATION ON BOTH SIDES OF MY FAMILY OF MEXICAN, ITALIAN, IRISH, AMERICAN INDIAN, SWISS AND ENGLISH HERITAGE.

SOME OF MY FAMILY GREW UP IN ONE ROOM MUD HOUSES AND MOST BECAME COMMUNITY LEADERS, GRADUATES OF THE U OF A AND ASU.

WE THINK LIKE THE FOUNDERS. WE TAKE NO CRAP. WE ARE THE AMERICAN SPIRIT.

AND MAKE NO MISTAKE ABOUT IT. THE FOUNDERS WERE OF A GREEK, ROMAN, JEWISH, CHRISTIAN EUROPEAN MIND.

IF THESE ETHNICS HATE THAT HERITAGE SO MUCH, GO BACK TO THE AZTECS, TO THE MAYANS, TO AFRICA, EVEN THE TEEPEES AND THE HOGANS OF THIS CONTINENT. GO BACK TO HUMAN SACRIFICE. GO BACK TO THE RULE OF THE POWERFUL. GO BACK TO THE TOTEMS

THOSE OF US WHO APPRECIATE THE CHRISTIAN EUROPEAN MIND, ITS HOSPITALS AND ORPHANAGES AND SCIENCE AND PHILOSOPHY AND GOVERNMENT THAT IT DEVELOPED FIRST, HAVE A RIGHT TO BE PROUD. IT IS THE JUDEO CHRISTIAN CULTURE THAT THE OTHERS WANT TO COME TO.

BUT LET US DEFEND IT. AND LEGAL IMMIGRANTS SHOULD HELP DO SO.

“Most businesses on their own are willing to spend money on Spanish advertisements, because they know it will possibly give them access to Latino dollars.”

You know, MARKET BASED SOLUTIONS. You want their money, you cater to that clientele. There is nothing wrong with that, but no company should be FORCED to offer services to someone who is not willing to do business in the language of the owner.

When I go to little-Mexico in the DFW area, I speak Spanish in those shops - because the owners typically speak Spanish. But, if they come to my company, they better speak English, because that’s what we speak! DUH!

“They should have been on top of it when AZ showed the way back to a Constitutional Country.”

Hey, give us a break - Texas’ Congress is not in session until January 2011! Our Congressional branch only meets every TWO years, so we are out of session and are not able to get on top of it, except if the Governor calls for a special session.

And Governor I-am-a-conservative-during-election-cycles Good-Hair Perry is NEVER going to call a special session for this purpose!

Sounds like Goddard deliberately dragged his feet, to cause maximum damage to the Optometrist's bank account. The legislature probably moved to slap the Dem AG...not the first or last to come down the pike. The legislature had to act to get on the lawsuit against Obamacare by the various states because Goddard refused to do it.

The (D) is up for election this year, I think.

He is going after the Governor's position.

This seems to be the present slate for Governor..
