Arizona did it again! Fresh from signing a law that reinforces a federal law giving police the right to ask a person stopped by police for an unrelated matter to produce papers proving the right to be legally in the US, followed by a law banning schools from teaching minority/ethnic studies courses advocating separatism, group superiority and subversion of this country, Arizona Governor Jan Brewer (R) signed
legislation affirming that nothing in state law requires businesses to provide "trained and competent" interpreters when a customer comes in speaking a language other than English. Assistant Attorney General Michael Walker said that has probably always been the law.
If it was always the law, why the need for this law? Because of a lawsuit of course. A unilingual Spanish speaking woman in Arizona was treated by a unilingual English speaking optometrist in his Arizona office. The woman's underage 12 year old daughter offered to be the interpreter; fearing legal, insurance and medical problems if the child misunderstood the optometrist refused, asking the mother and child to return with an English speaker over 18 or alternatively, visit some Spanish speaking optometrists. Instead, the Spanish speaker, whether legally in this country or not, understood enough of this country to file a discrimination suit against the English speaking optometrist. Refusing to settle, the optometrist finally won after the Arizona Attorney General took a year to decide no laws had been broken.

Anyone not capable of reading Enlgish is not capable of understanding the law, OSHA regulations, their labor rights, etc.
Arizona provides me with yet another warm, fuzzy feeling.
“Anyone not capable of reading Enlgish is not capable of understanding the law”....
especially drunk behind the wheel of a car!.....
Arizona is on a roll!
It gets better every day..
What upset me was the city counsel of Austin voted to ban Arizona..Believe me that is not what the majority of Texans think..I do think if Perry wants to win again as our governor he had better suck it up and back this woman in Arizona..
Sounds like Goddard deliberately dragged his feet, to cause maximum damage to the Optometrist's bank account. The legislature probably moved to slap the Dem AG...not the first or last to come down the pike. The legislature had to act to get on the lawsuit against Obamacare by the various states because Goddard refused to do it.
I agree, Texas was all talk and no show ....
I also agree with the comment it's probably a useless law because it's already the law.
“The Republican Party needs a few good men....Will some of you please step foward to save the country?”
WHY do we need a few good men? Obviously, we have enough kick-ass ladies doing the job the men won’t do. The men need to decide soon whether they want to lead or not. If not, then they need to get the hell outta the way and let the women clean up the mess.
I’m also a proud Arizonan - fifth generation to be here!
Now my only question is ... What the hell is wrong with all the other states? Step it up!!!
Language Diversity
In order to ensure that all citizens can participate in the electoral process and pursuant to Federal law, election materials are produced and oral assistance is provided in a variety of languages. For example, Los Angeles County provides ballots, sample ballots, and other materials, as well as oral assistance in seven languages: English, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, Tagalog and Vietnamese. Some jurisdictions, in response to local need, provide written and oral assistance in other languages. This adds to the challenges of conducting an error-free election.
No MAY about it! I AM moving to Arizona. The house closes today and the moving van will be here Friday. I plan to sit in the shade of a cactus tree and watch the Horny Toads and Gila monsters play. Arizona, Here I come.
I’m not arguing with that at all!...whoevers got the brass...step up now!!
“No more press 1 for English- Press 2 for Spanish- Press three for French-Press 4 for German- press 5 for Chinese- Press 6 for Arabic-Press 7 for Farsi....etc.”
And those are the GOOD menu options. An AT&T number I called had Spanish FIRST, and didn’t get to English until THREE! Disgusting.
I know....It’s ridiculous!
Wow, ‘Zona is leading the way!!!!
Actually, I’m very surprise the AG’s office decided for the optometrist. Our AG is a liberal Democrat. I used to rank him up there with Mo Udall - respected his ethics, disagreed on politics. But some of his recent statements lead me to believe he’s become just another politician, selling his beliefs in return for support in the coming election.
You mean no more Press 1 for Spanish, Press 2 for Chinese ?
