NEW YORK (AP) - In a 13-story building, damaged by debris from the Sept. 11 airliners that brought down the World Trade Center and soon to become a mosque, some see the bridging of a cultural divide and an opportunity to serve a burgeoning, peaceful religious population. Others see a painful reminder of the religious extremism that killed their loved ones.
Two Muslim organizations have partnered to open the mosque and cultural center in lower Manhattan, saying the $100 million project will create a venue for mainstream Islam and a counterbalance to radicalism. It earned a key endorsement this week from influential community leaders.
But some 9/11 victims' families said they were angered that it would be built so close to where their relatives died.
"I don't like it," said Evelyn Pettigano, who lost a sister in the attacks, during a phone interview on Thursday. "I'm not prejudiced. ... It's too close to the area where our family members were murdered."
But the growing number of congregants at the only other nearby mosque, open only one day a week, created a need for an additional space for Muslim prayer in the neighborhood, said Daisy Khan, the executive director of the American Society for Muslim Advancement and a board member of the Cordoba Initiative, the two organizations sponsoring the project.
The history associated with the building, a former Burlington Coat Factory store that closed after being damaged on 9/11, was a reason to pick it for the project, she said.

Modesty is one thing. Viewing women as too dirty to enter the main worship hall is an entirely different ballgame, imo.
YEAH!!! GOOD IDEA! Let’s start th is across our land! I miss church bells ringing all around the town or city. Then uhbama can say “There is no more beautiful sound than church bells on a Sunday morning”. I mean since he said “the most beautiful sound on earth is the calling to prayer for Muslims(the loud speakers feature that tongue wagging sinus sounding hum) surely he only said this because he never has heard the church bells ringing across the sky! They probably did not have that many churches where he grew up.
stealth jihad bump
It is growing mainly in the black population in prisons.
How ‘bout a Texas barbecue place?
The symbolism is obscene and outrageous.
Just imagine the gloating and sense of conquest on the part of the islamists - They must be thinking and rejoicing...”Here in the place we destroyed the symbol of america rises OUR symbol, the biggest mosque in NY.”
This is the equivalent of us bombing the black box in Mecca and building a church in its place.
I can’t believe how easily we’re surrendering! If this stands, we’ll have become a pathetic country and deserve every awful thing that will come our way!
Prison and jails are their main recruiting grounds.
IIRC, disabled veterans have priority in getting permits to vend on the street in NYC.
Isn’t that special. (Pardon me while I lose my breakfast.)
Church bells will ALWAYS be the most beautiful sound to me. I wish all the churches WOULD ring their bells .
Everyone being PC. That’s what is taking this country down.
I don’t think Christians are even allowed to build a church in Saudi Arabia. I’m not sure, but I do know the Saudi’s have made it hard for female military (there to protect them of all things...grrrrr) .
SO SO I!!! I love that sound, it is a reminder of my childhood, when the bells around the town would ring in joy and song on Sunday mornings. I miss that. I wonder if the same people that complained about that will complain about the ugly male voice flapping against the upper mouth while he hums different notes that sound as sour and weird to me as punk rock does.
If the US were not buying petroleum from OPEC, none of this would be a problem.
Giving the finger to New York and all effected by 9/11.
“If the US were not buying petroleum from OPEC, none of this would be a problem.”
I don’t think there’s a strong connection between the two - we get most of our oil from non-arab countries with Canada, Mexico and Venezuela being the top three.
This is a culture war that’s been going off and on for centuries.
As I said in my prior post, and speaking as someone who lives in NYC, most NYers are blase about stuff like this. They view “Islamophobia” as the province of rednecks.
Good will rule out over evil every time.
