Pa. legislator plans to introduce immigration bill

Arizona's new immigration law may get a hearing in Pennsylvania.

State Rep. Daryl Metcalfe, R-Butler, on Tuesday plans to introduce an immigration bill modeled on the law in Arizona.

The Arizona law allows police to investigate the immigration status of people whom they suspect lack permission to live in the United States. Harboring illegal immigrants or impeding traffic while stopping to give a ride to day laborers are prohibited. If the state and local governments fail to enforce the law, Arizona residents can sue them.

State Sen. David Argall, R-Tamaqua, thinks Arizona's law is headed for a constitutional challenge. But in Pennsylvania he thinks there is "considerable support to do something to tighten our immigration policy."

"Many people believe the federal government has failed on that front," Argall said.

Four years ago, the Pennsylvania Legislature enacted a law that strips state funding from projects for which companies knowingly employ illegal immigrants. Former state Rep. Bob Allen of Pottsville sponsored the legislation after immigration officials raided a warehouse under construction in Schuylkill County.

"I don't believe anyone has ever challenged our right to do that," Argall said.

State Sen. Raphael Musto, D-Pittston Township, doesn't know how Pennsylvania's lawmakers would vote on a proposal like Arizona's law.

"I do know what Arizona is doing. Arizona wants to drive attention to the problem for the whole nation, and it is a big problem. No question about it. All the social agencies, the hospitals, the schools - they're breaking," Musto said. "What Arizona is telling the world is … what the problems really are. We experienced that in Hazleton for a number of years."

House Majority Leader Todd Eachus, D-Butler Township, who represents Hazleton, said an Arizona-style law would add duties to understaffed state and local police.

Recently, 400 Pennsylvania State Police troopers retired, he said, and the class of new recruits has 100 instead of 200 because of budget woes.

Shifting the job of immigration enforcement to state and local police, Eachus said, would squeeze state taxpayers.

"I don't know what's in the water in Arizona, but our taxpayers aren't going to drink it," he said.

Look for this bill to fail miserably. Our legislators are not enlightened enough to vote for something so common sense. Always the same old, same old.

...and the current situation isn't squeezing the state taxpayers? Someone show this @$$ the door.

Daryl Metcalfe is a superb legislator and an awesome speaker. I'm very impressed with this guy. Our own freshman legislator (Tim Krieger) isn't too shabby either.

About this time last year, Tim Krieger came door knocking in our neighborhood. After a few minutes of conversation and reading over his literature, I could tell he was the real deal. I told him I would vote for him come general election time, but it probably wouldn't do any good as our district was so heavilly Democrat that I planned to vote for the least objectionable Democrat in the primary.

He asked if I would take a lawn sign. I said "Sure, I've always has a soft spot for Don Quixotie." He told me he was going to win and I just gave him an incredulous look and said "Good Luck."

I still kid him that he rode in on Obama's coattails, because our area saw what an egotistic POS Obama really was in the primary. McCain Sarah Palin carried our county by 58%-- and Democrat registration outnumber Republicans by 2-1.

Maybe, but I’m still going to spread the word to all my fellow Pennsylvanians, and not jus allow the “same old, same old” attitude to win without a fight.

Somethings I just do not understand. The state strips all of the assets of drug dealers and users, but not criminal aliens and those that assist them. All legislation should include the confiscation of all ill gotten gains by criminal aliens. This would give police incentive to enforce the law, unburden the taxpayers from the enforcement of immigration laws, and send out a very strong message to those that assist or are in the country illegally.

Imagine how many lawyers would take up the cases if they do not get paid. Better yet, imagine the lawyers who may be on the receiving end of confiscation.

Incredible picture. You have captured perfectly what’s wrong with law enforcement in this country. The police have become little more than jack-booted fundraisers for the corrupt and oppressive state. While our cities are teeming with open air drug markets and violent crime, our police are out sitting on their butts aiming radar guns at harmless citizens going five miles over the speed limit.

Were I a cop, I would turn in my badge rather than be reduced to this level of slothful skulduggery. All that’s missing are the donuts.

A state won’t need as many officers once the crininal ILLEGALS are gone to the sanctuary cities across the nation that so dearly love ILLEGALS.

The Arizona law allows police to investigate the immigration status of people whom they suspect lack permission to live in the United States.

More blatant lying by the press. That sentence IS NOT TRUE. Let me fix it...

The Arizona law allows police to investigate the immigration status of people whom they suspect lack permission to live in the United States AFTER they have been stopped/detained for another reason.

nobama said you could get stopped just because you took your kid to get an ice cream. He lies!

the loon left knew this would spread hence their vocal opposition to the bill at first.

Now the left has a problem because their name calling tactic has failed and people are not as PC as they used to be.

The public has had enough of staying silent while the left ruins this country

This bill has a good chance of passing the senate. It may pass the house. However, Ed Rendell will never EVER sign this bill. He will veto it on the spot. The senate might be able to pick up four to override the veto, however the house will need to pick up about 30 seats to get the veto. I don’t see it happening. Not this year. Maybe next year.
