Tancredo Says Arizona Law Goes Too Far Former Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-CO), who crusaded for tough anti-immigration measures while in Congress, told KDVR-TV that while he supported the new immigration law in Arizona he thought it went too far.

Said Tancredo: "I do not want people here, there in Arizona, pulled over because you look like should be pulled over."

“If you couple that with other factors (beat up work van, young worker,
county where registered, etc., most definitely!). It may not fit your thought
of legal but I see too damn many of these.’

I see. So if you were say 50 years old driving a 7 year old truck that was in pretty good shape and were in a mostly middle class part of town you (and I mean you personally) wouldn’t have a problem with being pulled over because you look like the demographic that cheats on their taxes. Of course you can avoid any hassle by carrying your tax info including past returns with you everywhere you go.
I didn’t know driving a beat up car while not breaking any traffic laws was probable cause. Or is that only if you’re under the age of 30.
No it doesn’t fit my thought of what’s legal, and it probably won’t fit whichever Fedral court it winds up getting tried in either.

Have it your way Snark. Don’t bitch the next time you have to take sick
kid to the emergency room and you have to wait hours because it’s filled
with illegals.

No comparison whatsoever to the other situation.

Here is your answer, Snark.

The driver should be pulled over only if it is YOU driving, and you should be audited back to the fetus.

You’re right about that, but I’d rather bitch about that than give up our rights as a free society and turn the USA into a 3rd world police state. It’s not against the law to drive a beater car, or not have any money or be Mexican. It’s always a bad idea to give the govt. or their agents (cops) any more authority than they already have.
The cop you mentioned that had the great record busting drug runners. How many innocent people did he shake down, bully, or intimidate in the process of getting some drug runners. I’ve never been in any trouble with the law in any way, but I do have long hair and I do drive a van, and I have been shaken down at least a dozen times since I’ve been grown. Never been arrested after a shake down, but I have been threatened and strip searched and detained and all that crap. I don’t think it’s a good trade off to give up personal freedom because somebody, somewhere is getting away with breaking a law. It’s not in my best interests to trade my (or yours, or anyones) civil rights just so somebody somewhere doesn’t get away with something.

Lol. I see. the law is to be used to get payback on people who disagree with your POV.
Are you a cop by any chance.

Yes it’s the same. Is it you’re position that a cop has probable cause based on the age and condition of an otherwise legal vehicle and the age of the driver.
The post by Gaffer said the truck wasn’t even speeding. So is it your position that you can tell somebody is breaking the law by the way thet’re not doing anything against the law. Both situations are based on the physical appearance of the car and driver.

I’d really like to see it come from Tancredo. If he’s running his mouth without reading the law he would lose any and all credibility.

If they LOOK like they should be pulled over, then they should be pulled over!

Tancredo, you’ve just entered the dumb bastard territory.

_______

I hope he was taken out of context, misquoted or something, but he’s becoming well known for contradicting himself.

He lost his glow with me when he repeatedly said he would not run in 2008 IF anyone strong on he border issues ran.

He should have kept his word.

I never said that just one "identifier," e.g., the beater car was a trigger point. Look, if you can't spot an illegal that is your problem, there are any number of clues - I just mentioned a couple.

Something you have to remember, that while a citizen of hispanic descent 'may' get tagged occasionally, it doesn't take very long to detemine whether they're worth investigating further or not. Finally, no I wouldn't mind getting pulled over if it meant that we could finally get rid of these criminals. The problem is that bad and this government refuses to do anything about it even though these people have no Constitutional rights whatsoever in my book.

I sympathize with your personal situation, but from the way you describe it, I don't think you were getting pulled over for suspicion of being illegal....

“I sympathize with your personal situation, but from the way you describe it, I don’t think you were getting pulled over for suspicion of being illegal.... “

No I get pulled over for driving while having long hair and out of state plates. I had a city cop in a little town out side of SLC tell me that my appearance fit their profile of a drug smuggler, long hair, van, Texas plates. While I agree that illegals need to be dealt with, I disagree with this method. What’s next, trucks with gun racks or NRA stickers are OK to stop on the off chance the driver has an illegal firearm. It won’t be a big deal if you’re legal and have all your papers in order. Anyway it wouldn’t effect a majority of citizens since most people don’t carry anyway so the percentage of citizens who get their rights trod upon would be small, and anyway it would be worth it if it helps stop another school shooting. We can’t take a chance that somebody somewhere might break the law.

Nobody should have their civil and constitutional rights trashed (American citizens that happen to be Mexican, or Mexican immigrants who are here legally) because somebody somewhere is breaking the law.

You said that while an American of Mexican descent may get tagged occasionally it won’t take long to sort it out. You’re being pretty cavalier with someone elses time and their rights as citizens. It’s almost funny that we bitch about govt having too much power then cheer when they get more as long as that power is directed at someone that’s not us. My problem with this is that when it comes time to stand up to the next govt power grab, we’ve already undermined our own position.

The cop was stupid. The guy I told you about wouldn't have stopped anyone like that - it's a stereotype of what a drug smuggler would look like. They go out of their way to look normal....

You and I disagree and there won't be any changing that. Your view of the exigency in dealing with this problem is second to everyone's universal rights. In spirit, I agree with you, but I also realize that if this problem isn't dealt with, AT A STATE LEVEL, this country will descend into third or fourth world chaos and a Consitution will be a thing of the past. I am not naive enough to believe that conditions could come into play where another Stalin, Hitler, Idi Amin for that matter could come into power. "Progressives" under the guise of 'rights' are hard at work. Regardless, Good luck on your future travelings.
