BERLIN: German Chancellor Angela Merkel arrived in the German capital yesterday after a 60-hour trip from the United States, including an overland odyssey across Europe because of the volcanic ash cloud over the continent.

“It is true. She has actually arrived back here in Berlin,” said a spokeswoman for the government.

The Chancellor left San Francisco on Thursday but her plane was unable to land in Germany as scheduled on Friday due to the ash cloud, which has caused air travel chaos in Europe.

She was diverted to Portugal and spent Friday night there before flying to Rome on Saturday and driving about 500km (300 miles) to Bolzano in the South Tyrol area of Italy where she stayed another night.

A government spokeswoman said the chancellor aimed to arrive back in Berlin on Sunday evening. Merkel was missing the burial of late Polish President Lech Kaczynski in the southern Polish city of Krakow yesterday due to her marathon journey.

A little bit of initiative on the part of the Germans. While everyone else is throwing up their hands (except, of course, John Cleese http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/2495462/posts ), Merkle comes up with a work-around.

I heard where someone spent $5,000 on a taxi to get them where they needed to go. Was that her?

No, that was actor John Cleese. Took a taxi from Norway through Sweden and then on to the UK.

God Bless Angela Merkel and Germany. At least she wasn’t playing golf instead of attending an important state funeral.

Not to mention that their trip was paid for in full by those EVIL, EVIL Lobbyists!

Of course, they’d be swingin’ from the rafters screamin’ at the top of their LUNGS if a Conservative had done this. *Rolleyes*
