Are You Seeing a Recovery (Green Shoots?) Where You Live?? (Open Question to Freepers)
quesney

What are you seeing in your neck of the woods? Are business conditions getting better -- or worse -- for you and the people you know? Any concrete details? And what are you expecting over the next year?

I live near NASA, property values have dropped over 10% this year and I expect worse. If 6000 people do get let go at NASA the entire county of Galveston, just recovering from Hurricanes Rita and Ike, will be much, much worse off.

“I’ve been unemployed for almost 6 months now.”

Zeddicus....I’m sending a prayer your way that you will soon have a job that you love.

Yes, but I think they are weeds. Here in the Peoples Republic of Illinois jobs are starting to appear again, but all the jobs are based on state and federal spending. But the state's bonds are down to junk rating. Tax revenue has plummeted as business ran to low tax states as fast as they could get out of their leases. Illinois announced that they may have to issue IOUs for the tax refunds. When the state spending stops and all the construction workers get sent home we are going to double dip faster than a Cedar Point roller coaster.

We were in Monterey/Carmel about six weeks ago to find stores closed. Hey, Liberals that means EMPTY. Restaurants around Northern CA as well as malls are closed or near empty. Casinos in Lake Tahoe are empty. One huge mall in Folsom, CA, was stopped, while under construction, and is now winterized and a shell. Everyone I talk to is not optimistic and angry and wants Congress voted out. Others are moving.

No recovery; just anger.

I think we’re entering a period where
the employed are feeling better,
corporations are making profits (having laid off a lot of people),
the stock market has recovered on the back of those profits,
people invested in the stock market are experiencing the wealth effect and spending more, and
hot money from Ben’s printing presses are making people more optimistic than they have a right to be, also creating bubbles and a great risk of inflation.

If you’re unemployed,
life sucks,
you’ve spent all your savings,
your house is in foreclosure,
0bummer’s policies are making sure no employer will hire,
your unemployment insurance is about to run out, and
you are moving in with your relatives.

The first group are usually leading indicators of an actual recovery that includes job growth. But 0bummer’s policies will help ensure that economic growth does not result in increased employment. No company is stupid enough to add to staff while 0bummer’s policies are in place.

In My Humble Opinion.

...small businesses closing in strip malls, they can’t hang on. A three year old strip mall close by has HALF of the stores closed. All within the last 6 months.

Norman, Oklahoma sure seems to be thriving, although I did read that the city government is worried it faces cutbacks because revenues are not expected to rise as much as their budget projections require. There seems to be a lot of building going on, in any case, traffic is thick, stores are busy, and when I volunteered at the local homeless shelter last month, the people were mostly regulars, and not in large numbers. I am sure the rural areas and small towns in Oklahoma are continuing to have economic problems due to a much longer trend, and it has sounded as though Tulsa is having some problems, but here in central Oklahoma, we seem fine. Just don’t tell Obama. Oklahoma is already most likely his least favorite state.

I’m sure any green shoots that try to emerge will be mercilessly drowned in Roundup by a government official.

Do you want to track who is losing their jobs? Please check out http://www.dailyjobcuts.com and see how many people are losing their jobs and where it is happening.

Be prepared for a shocker.

There isnt a recovery now or in the near future. What the adminstration’s cheerleaders are doing is twisting the news and numbers around to fit their message.

Folks these jobs are GONE and they are not coming back anytime soon. Anyone stating any thing different is a FOOL and you should not listen to them

Health insurance companies are a major employer where I live. To the extent that they will be employing anybody a couple of years from now they are scrambling to put as many of those jobs in India as possible. All thanks to Obama, Pelosi, and the health care bill which dictates what they are allowed to spend on administration. I expect joblessness to surge locally.

Our area is doing better then many since we are a gold mining community. Our unemplyment rate is 8.3 percent. That said, the paper this week had headlines of local government raising taxes big time and Burglaries have doubled compared to all of last year so far.

Here in KY we have several green shoots that are stemming from private businesses...NOT government junk.

Home values are going down a bit, but prices are going down more — a needed correction in South Central KY.

Optimistic, but not rosy.
