Polish president dies in air crash
A plane carrying Lech Kaczynski, the Polish president, has crashed near Smolensk airport in western Russia, killing all on board, Russian officials have reported.
Polish officials confirmed on Saturday that Kaczynski was on board the flight with his wife, as well as Slawomir Skrzypek, the president of Poland's central bank, Andrzej Kremer, the deputy foreign minister and the army chief of staff.
The crash occurred about 1.5km from Smolensk airport in foggy conditions.
Exactly the same thoughts came to my mind, when I’ve heard about this tragedy.
Update: 88 people were on the list of the passengers (not 132).
O MY ! I hope they allow US to assist them in the investiation.. our NTSB is the best in the world for crash reconstruction? Any suspected hijacking? Intentional crash murder/suicide? serious questions to ask.. condolences aside we need to help the people of Poland find out exactly what happened and why

I don't quite understand why Poles would go to Russia to observe the anniversary of Russian troops murdering Polish officers held prisoner.
This re-inforces the wisdom of not having all your top leaders on one aircraft.

CNN International was just showing live coverage of Russia Today TV and they were showing video of the wreckage. There’s not much there but one of the large engines. Awful.

On their way to Russia to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Katyn massacre, apparently. BBC stating 87 dead including the president, his wife, the governor of the central bank, and numerous other senior government officials and ministers. Tragic.
