In an effort to build its credibility and influence nationwide, the tea party movement on Thursday announced the formation of a "federation" of tea party groups.

Mark Shroder, a member of the Memphis Tea Party, told a crowd of roughly 200 conservative activists gathered outside the state capitol that 21 factions of the movement will form the National Federation Tea Party. Shroder said the federation will act as a "rapid response" to "misinformation" allegedly put forth by the "mainstream media."

But the conservative movement, which has prided itself on its refusal to formally merge with the Republican Party, refuted claims Thursday that the tea party seeks to form its own political party.

We will not be controlled by anyone, let alone self-proclaimed "leaders."

That's what makes the Tea Party movement unique and powerful.

NO one will be able to stop this truly grassroots movement.

It is NOT a party, simply all various groups joining one, I know I get emails from 4-6 various groups of tea parties, FOX News is trying to say it will become a 3rd party, but I think not- not yet anyway, maybe if we lose 2010 and 2012, but not time to panic.

And it’s good not to place too much power in one person’s hands.

The beauty of the tea party concept is leaderless resistance, Go ahead and give them targets and see what happens.

From Sarah Palin's speech to the Tea party Convention:

"And in that spirit, I caution against allowing this movement to be defined by any one leader or politician. The Tea Party movement is not a top-down operation. It’s a ground-up call to action that is forcing both parties to change the way that they're doing business, and that’s beautiful. This is about the people. This is about the people, and it’s bigger than any king or queen of a Tea Party. And it’s a lot bigger than any charismatic guy with a teleprompter."

The soul of this movement is the people -- everyday Americans who grow our food and run our small businesses, teach our kids, and fight our wars. They’re folks in small towns and cities across this great nation who saw what was happening -- and they saw and were concerned, and they got involved. Like you, they go to town hall meetings, and they write op-eds. They run for local office. You all have the courage to stand up and speak out. You have a vision for the future, one that values conservative principles and common sense solutions. And if that sounds like you, then you probably too are feeling a bit discouraged by what you see in Washington D.C.

Information and ideas must be exchanged. As long as this IS NOT an attempt to form a third party I think it is good.

Not good, IMO. Now there’s a representative organization / people for the left to target. And we need to see what happened in November before we go splitting off to a 3rd party.

IMO.

Not good.

Once “leaders” get involved, the system perverts itself with power...

Don’t like this at all.

We should keep them confused about our names also. Harder to keep track of in databases and it makes the media look like fools.

Mark Scoda does not speak for me.

Exactly, my Mother was a committed Independent. I always felt the runas by third party assured the election of Leftie Dums.

I think I may go the independent way, however I have to weight that against primary votes. I think candidates should state their political leanings, but run within the parties.

As we have seen with the current situation, the commie/Fascist/socialist managed to get power by infiltrating the Dum Party.

I still think nothing should be done now, The TPM needs to show it’s strength in the 2010 elections. If we can run the ballot then, THAT is POWER.

The worst thing that could happen for the Conservative cause is for the Tea Party to show up as a third Party on the Nov 2010 & 2012 ballots. This will cause more division than Ross Perot's Reform Party. I hope this is not where this is going.

You can bet that Ed Schultz, Chris Mathews, Obama, Pelosi and all the rest of the Progressives are on their knees praying to their God that this happens.

The tea party doesn’t need to centralize. It has been growing steadily since February 2009 without any centralization. This is nothing more than an attempted hijack of the tea party movement.

"R Party is going to continue to be the progressive enabling party"

So we have two choices now:

Party #1: The Republicans who are the party of:

Progressive Enabling Elitists, and

Party #2: The Democrats who are the party of:

Socialists Harboring Islamic Terrorists

“Shroder said the federation will act as a “rapid response” to “misinformation” allegedly put forth by the “mainstream media.”

Maybe my bias against this idea is showing, but this sounds like something Obama would say, only with different enemies...

I’m just sayin’.

It's the reason why I'm against any third parties. Why bother? They will lead into the same problem as our current parties. It's better to reform from within when there's a problem. We should always be reforming from within

It is no so much that organization brings a target that concerns me but that organization defines. By that I mean the more nebulous and general the movement (taxes, government intervention, rights) the more people it attacks. Parties and candidates need specifics, movements don’t.
