Acknowledging it would be a highly unpopular move, White House economic adviser Paul Volcker said yesterday the United States should consider imposing a "value added tax" similar to those charged in Europe to help get the deficit under control.
A VAT is a national sales tax that, like state and city sales taxes, would be collected by retailers.
Volcker, at the New-York Historical Society, told a panel on the global financial crisis that Congress might also have to consider new taxes on carbon and energy.

They are tanking the economy on purpose, you know. For the same reason they are desperately trying to instigate violence from the right.
This is THE fastest way to create an underground BLACK MARKET.
They told us global warming was a fact. That it was settled science. It turns out it was a deliberate lie cooked up by liberals seeking free government grant money abetted by liberal politicians looking to control the masses.
They told us ObamaCare was free health care for everyone. Turns out this too is another liberal lie. VAT taxes, “carbon taxes it was all a ruse fully supported by the willing accomplices in the corrupt MSM. Who knew that the house of liberals is completely built on lies and deception, huh?
No place do they mention restricting government spending.

The “social cost of carbon” and by default ...energy. I can’t make this stuff up.
That, and they will also start spending and creating countless new Socialist Programs to suck up all the "revenue" they have taken from the Publik. There will be no end to it, or reasonable restraint.

ENOUGH WITH THE F——— TAXES ALREADY!!!
They think govt spending is the only way out of this mess...
I am quickly approaching the limit at which I can no longer afford to live in the United States.
How did we get here?
Rhetorical question for sure.
Right. Only a certifiable idiot would even suggest such a laughable premise.
Panama is nice, lot of US former military there. A condo overlooking the locks in Panama City is about $125K. Walking distance to the mall, and Hooters.
Po’ folks pay this one. They pay it in a lot larger proportion than people who can control their consumption to avoid taxation.
I predict this will nor cut down on the number of cell phones ipods and big s reen TV’s owned by the welfare classes, but crime may increase.
Why? Because over 50% of Americans don't pay any income taxes. Over 20% get refunds - they get paid to file taxes! They don't care what the government does, because they don't pay for it - the other 50% does. (5% top taxpayers pay 70% of all income taxes!). Free health care - sure; expanded medicare - sure. I read that in the 1980’s about 30% of Americans were receiving some sort of gov’t aid; that number to rise over 60% under this Administration. We simply cannot afford it.
The only way to get out of our ridiculously progressive taxation in this country is to tax people on what they consume - consume more - pay more; consume less - pay less. You control it.
Of course, the fallacy of my argument is that adults run the tax policy in this country and would use the VAT to reduce income taxes. Even more, that they would reduce spending. If the Dem's put in a VAT, the GOP could run on reducing income taxes and cut spending (oh, and repealing Obamacare) and win in a landslide.
Probably will never get this idea passed though. It would cut off the feeding trough of our elected officials.
So they perpetually fund the Socialism State and make it an institutional way of life in America.
If I ran my household the way Washington spends our tax money I would be dirt poor and in debt. Then I would have to apply for free food, help with utilities, tax credits, free health....hey wait a minute.
