Was hoping you’d be along soon to elaborate on all the data . . . even if you ended with the usual

‘nothing happening here abnormally, move along.’

LOL.

Perhaps the most defensible statement about the NMSZ is that it is poorly understood.

While in grad school I wanted study the physics of spherical shells and whether the rheology the crust around New Madrid would allow for the storage or release of energy. There are kids’ toys where you deform a shell, set it down, and in time it will “pop” back to a more spherical shape.

Also I wanted to compare the New Madrid motion to small quakes that are observed near new dams where the crust is loaded by the weight of the impound.

What grabbed my attention about the NM 1812 event was that the ground motion rang church bells in Boston.

I know that there are actual limits for the wind speeds in hurricanes and tornados...du to the laws of physics..but is there a atheoretical, or actual limit to the maximum strength of on earthquake..?IOW, is an 11.0, or a 14.0, a possible event?

There are physical limits to the size of an earthquake on earth.

Basically anything larger (or maybe a tad larger, I guess) than the 1960 Chile Earthquake (M 9.5) is impossible; that's about the longest subduction-fault segment in the world.

You would need a fault circling the ENTIRE earth for a magnitude 10.5 earthquake as depicted in the awful "10.5" movie.

I think if you're talking truly massive asteroid impacts you can get above 11.0, but at that point the earthquake is the least of your problems.

I didn’t hear the original Spanish, but the word might have been “colapsado,” which doesn’t so much mean “falling apart” as “shut down.” Traffic can be “colapsado,” for example, meaning that it’s completely stalled because of unusually heavy traffic or an accident or some other event.

I heard that they’re having trouble getting to the southern part of the country, partly because of the literal physical collapse of highways, etc., but also because communication has failed and everything is shut down. So I don’t think he’s really referring to part of the country physically falling apart.

There’s certainly nothing abnormal about giant subduction quakes in Chile.

So have you figured out what offense Chile is being punished for, yet?

"The southern half of my country is falling apart."

I think that is a bit hyperbolic. If the individual had never gone through such an event - it would seem all was falling apart

"why no power?"

Power seems to be back for now. I wish my laptop had a longer battery life! Two hours is not enough.

We're in the midst of a snow storm in NY. Three feet of snow so far in my area, over 50 inches in higher elevations and more coming. Many towns have lost power since Thursday. My town was late in losing power. This is so minor compared to what's happening now in Chile and surrounding areas.

I'll catch up with reading now.

I said it much further upthread and I’ll say it again: I hope and PRAY Pat Robertson doesn’t open up his yap on this.

Although I know that it’s very likely.

you are correct the verb colapsar is most likely meant in this term as paralized or stopped.

Also, it just occurred to me that maybe what he actually meant is that MANY buildings throughout Chile have collapsed??? And maybe his english is poor, or the translation sadly lacking.

Thank YOU very much, it took me a long time to come up with the idea of 'collapse' as opposed to the mental imagery of "falling apart."

I appreciate you taking the time to reply.

MSNBC is showing a video taken during the actual earthquake, which lasted about 2 minutes per some reports.

Video is showing the shaking and some initial destruction.
