WASHINGTON (AFP) A straw poll of US conservative activists saw Texas congressman Ron Paul emerge as the preferred Republican presidential candidate to run against President Barack Obama in 2012.
Some 31 percent of the more than 2,000 Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) attendees who participated in the poll voted for the outspoken libertarian.
Former Alaska governor Sarah Palin, John McCain's running mate in 2008, came in third with 7.0 percent, some way behind former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney (22 percent), who had won the CPAC poll for the last three years.
There were boos among the crowd as the name of Paul -- a 74-year-old Texan who ran a short-lived presidential campaign in 2008 and is considered unlikely to be a serious contender for the Republican party?s nomination -- was announced.

I don’t much like R-U-N Paul - Libertarians are nuts.
Oh please. Please tell the Paulbots to stop with this nonsense or maybe a combination of the bots and the left.
Crazy is as crazy does. Just because Obama is worse for the country, does not make Paul any less bad for it.
In what way? Please explain. I thought he was on our side (pro-gun, pro-life, limited government) or am I confusing him with somebody else?
Palin’s core supporters tend to be over 40, and in rural areas, ie not the type of folks you would see at CPAC.
I don’t mind him in congress. He votes “no” on everything. He’s no nuttier than the rest of Washington. He just sticks out a little every 4 years.
I still can’t tell if Ron Paul reminds me more of Mickey Dolenz or Larry Storch.
I do not refer to him as R-U-N Paul just because - pay attention to his foreign policy positions.
The CPAC has been taken over by RINOS and 20 year old “neocons”. Whatever the hell that is.
Romneys crazier than the both of them if he thinks he's getting the nomination.
That Ken doll? I can just see it now... Romney/Palin, the libs would paint them as Ken and Barbie.
Yeah I’m not sure what “neocons” are either.
Misleading headline of hte year nomination.

This poll is total garbage and not indicative of the attendies of the conference. These goofballs gave the MSM the headline they needed to diminsh Sarah for not accepting their invitation.
Did the article even mention that only about 23% of the attendees were able to vote in the straw poll?
I’ve debated a few on here. I think you have to be high school age, socially uber liberal, and fiscally conservative.
2 things:
Only 25% of the crowd voted.
Most of the 25% were 18-34 in age.
That should tell you everything you need to know!
Attracting young people is fine .. but a lot of them are just dumb when it comes to politics.
According to mazda77 that's 23% of CPAC attendees.

The straw poll isn’t representative of the Republican voter by any stretch. Of the 10,000 registered attendees the voting was done by 2395 of them. Of the 2395 48% were students and 56% were under 25 years of age. I don’t think that is representative of the Republican voter at large thus to extrapolate this poll to the Republican populace is in error, imo.

It sure seems overrun with college kids, not that that’s a bad thing. I may be wrong about the tinfoilers, but when I went in past years, their was a high contingent of them (cringeworthy), talking about the chemtrails, mind-control radio antennas in Alaska and the Falkland Islands, etc.
