Archaeology in Jerusalem: Digging Up Trouble
TIME/Arutz Sheva ^ | 2-12-10 | Tim McGirk

Posted on 02/12/2010 5:46:50 AM PST by SJackson

The Jerusalem syndrome is a psychological disorder in which a visit to the holy city triggers delusional and obsessive religious fantasies. In its extreme variety, people wander the lanes of the Old City believing they are biblical characters; John the Baptist, say, or a brawny Samson, sprung back to life.

Archaeologists in the Holy Land like to joke that their profession is vulnerable to a milder form of the syndrome. When scientists find a cracked, oversize skull in the Valley of Elah, it can be hard to resist the thought that it might have belonged to Goliath, or to imagine, while excavating the cellars of a Byzantine church, that the discovery of a few wooden splinters might be part of the cross on which Christ died. This milder malady is nothing new. In the mid-19th century, British explorers who came to Jerusalem with a shovel in one hand and a Bible in the other used the holy book as a sort of treasure map in the search for proof of Christianity's origins. (See a video of archaeology digging up controversy in Jerusalem.)

Now an extreme case of the willful jumbling of science and faith is threatening Jerusalem's precarious spiritual balance. It could not come at a worse time: Israeli-Arab peace talks have stalled; Israel has a hawkish government disinclined to compromise; and radical Islamist group Hamas remains powerful among Palestinians. Any tilt in Jerusalem's religious equilibrium could create a wave of unrest spreading far beyond the city's ramparts. Eric Meyers, who teaches Jewish studies and archaeology at Duke University, says: "Right now, Jerusalem is a tinderbox. "

TIME: Digging Up Trouble in Jerusalem

Reported: 19:42 PM - Feb/11/10

(IsraelNN.com) The United States-based Time Magazine complained this week that the archaeological activities of the City of David Foundation, also known as “Ir David” or “Elad,” are hijacking Israel's political agenda. It also implies the organization is forcing Muslims to accept the Jewish truth of Biblical historical statements through archaeological discoveries in the Ir David neighborhood, south of Jerusalem's Old City.

Time failed to point out that the City of David, also known as Shiloach in Hebrew and Silwan in Arabic, has only been an Arab village since the 1930s. Some 60 percent of the land is Jewish-owned, including a number of acres purchased by Baron Edmond James de Rothschild in the early 20th century, prior to the appearance of the Arab villagers.

Israel has a hawkish government disinclined to compromise; and radical Islamist group Hamas remains powerful among Palestinians.

One doesn't have to read much beyond this sentence. I guess the folks at Time haven't heard about who it is that is in charge on the Temple Mount. (Israel could have kicked their sorry Muslim @$$e$ off and out when they conquered it in 1967.) And they must not have heard about Sinai and Gaza either. Bombs, rockets, and indoctrination of little Pali children has been the reward.

Sometimes it does appear that no act by a Jew in the Holy Land goes unchallenged. One might think the Jews were invaders from another galaxy far far away instead of a people returning home. Sometomes....

Time did mention that fact, and the fact that the Rothchilds bought the place, and that the land was rebought through intermediaries. But what’s up with the idea that they’re looking for David’s palace? I thought it was already found:
