Obama to Create Panel to Study Deficit
NY Times ^ | January 19, 2010 | JACKIE CALMES

WASHINGTON — President Obama plans to create a bipartisan commission to make recommendations to Congress on ways to reduce the federal budget deficit under an agreement reached Tuesday night at the White House.

The agreement is tentative, pending consultations between Congressional leaders and some House and Senate lawmakers. Some details remained in flux.

But according to people familiar with the deal, in principle it commits Democrats to work with Republicans to do what they have not been able to do for a decade through the regular process: compromise on spending cuts and tax increases to produce reductions in annual deficits that, under George W. Bush and now Mr. Obama, have reached the highest levels since World War II.

In the short run, such a commission would buy time for the White House and Congress, putting off decisions until after this year’s midterm elections while the commission deliberates. Democrats and most economists argue that this year is not the right time to make big cuts in spending or raise taxes while the economy remains at risk of falling back into recession.

Gosh, what a unique idea. After all, like UFOs no one knows exactly where deficits come from. A panel commissioned by the smartest, well spoken light skinned person on planet earth will figure it out. And find a solution.

Yes, after he has already jacked up discretionary spending and Democrat/union-thug payoffs beyond anything seen in history.

I think their report has already been written, and it can be boiled down to two words - raise taxes.

Why do we need a fricking ‘PANEL’???

Why can’t the President (and Congress-critters) finally ‘MAN-UP’ and CUT the bloated government???

Some details remained in flux.

Indeed. A cluster flux.

ways to reduce the federal budget deficit

In the 2008 campaign, Obama was asked for specifics on how he would "reduce the deficit". His answer was basically: "I would invest in roads and bridges. I would invest in schools and hospitals. Most importantly, I would invest in green technology so that we can get our deficit under control."

Expect more of the same -- throw trillions of dollars at the deficit, in an effort to make it go away.

Another meeting. Another problem solved!

Meetings: The bastion of the unqualified manager.

Whenever a problem arises and a manager has no clue, he calls a meeting to see if anyone has an answer he can use.

If it works, it was his great decision.

If it fails, "Who came up with that lame idea."

Hasn’t he learned yet that his show panels are meaningless?

That dog won’t hunt, Mr. President. In case you did not get the memo, the people have been “awakened” (sleeping giant that the Japs feared).

Panels / commissions (a k a smoky backrooms) are soooo 2009.

Fail!

Great idea. I hired a panel of Ivy League experts to find out why my household finances were in the Krapper. After 18 months of intensive study they determined that I spend more money than I earn. The biggest problem, they found, is that every time one of my teenagers goes on the rampage—screaming and slamming doors—I peel off a few $20s to buy some peace.

They told me to stop paying protection money.

Why didn’t I think of that?

So typical of Barry Zero...so far this is his governing style, create panels, hold summits, talk, talk, talk...and then do nothing. No tangible results. Try and convince the people you are doing something when really, you are doing nothing but playing golf. The man is a lightweight, an empty suit.

The definition of style over substance.

Oh goody, another blue ribbon panel to discuss how to not use the obvious solutions.

They will, once again, ACT as though they care and do nothing but raise taxes and “fees”.

If he raises taxes on anyone making $250K...the DEMS are TOAST in November....even more so than they are now. LOL!!!

In the end the magic rich # is $150K. Im still predicting that.

We’re gonna have a meeting and then a commission and then a facting finding group to read that commission report.

Yeesh ....my son’s 8th grade Algebra class would laugh at this assignment.

Not enough growth and revenue....way too much spending.
Grow up and get to work Obama...

oh oh more cuts to the F35 JSF since he already killed the F22 Raptor.
