Haiti earthquake: Wyclef Jean calls for evacuation of Port-au-Prince
The Daily Telegraph ^ | 1/19/10 | The Daily Telegraph

"Port-au-Prince is a morgue," Jean said at a Manhattan press conference, recounting how he collected the corpses of small children and adults from the festering streets on his recent trip.

Tears streamed down his face as he looked into the camera, speaking to his countrymen.

Residents should be evacuated to tent cities outside Port-au-Prince to allow for aid to reach them and so cleanup can begin in earnest, Jean said, asking for help from around the world in building encampments.

"We need to migrate at least 2 million people," Jean said, promising to draw on his status as one of Haiti's favorite sons to aid in such an effort. "I give you my word, if I tell them to go, they will go. But they need somewhere to go to," Jean said.

I can only imagine that the Obama administration's plan is not to have refugee camps in order that the resulting suffering will give them an opening to migrate a large part of the Haitian population to Florida.

Isn’t Jean the “rap artist” whose charity for Haiti is being investigated for misappropriating funds?

I keep seeing the name “Wyclef Jean” appearing all over the place, although it’s totally unfamiliar to me. Haiti was originally founded (sort of) by French Protestant pirates who settled at the one end of the island of Hispaniola during a time when the Spanish didn’t have enough resources to drive them out. So I guess that’s where the name “Wyclef” comes from, at least distantly.

But why is this guy suddenly popping out in every news report? Is he a friend of Obama’s?

It is jingoist, ethnocentric, and arrogant to believe we can help Haitians by removing them from their culture and bringing them here. But I’m sure nearby Cuba with its Michael Moore endorsed health care system could house many thousands of Haitians temporarily until they could island hop back home.

Maybe instead of pocketing the money from Yele Haiti....maybe Wyclef could use that money to rebuild Haiti

With our economic problems we cannot take the economic impact of millions of fleeing Haitians.

Sending them to Cuba is a great idea....

I never heard of this guy until last Thursday, but I’ve done some catching up . . .

He’s a successful recording artist. He does rap with a reggae sound. (actually not bad) He’s a native of Haiti, and a few years ago he founded “Yele” (an NGO) for the purpose of helping Haiti.

He flew to Haiti immediately following the quake. He and his wife physically moved bodies and rubble for 2 days. Sunday one of his employees was murdered while trying to deliver supplies.

From all I can see, this is a pretty stand up guy.

In fact, I suspect much of the traction about the finances of his charity is due to him “crowding out” Obama as the “Hero of Haiti”. His requests for money through “Yele” are in direct competition for donations with Obama’s WhiteHouse.gov drive.

Probably more important, this guy comes off so sincere and dedicated - he makes Obama look superficial and phony by comparison. Judge for yourself:

Haitians don’t want to leave Haiti. We need to help them there, because they will not be happy here.

Venezuala can take them to avoid the American occupation of Haiti. Let the Dominican Republic annex the rest of Hispaniola and do what they want with it.

I said the same thing a few days ago (and got the idea from another FReeper). It is insane to try and give aid and shelter to two million people in the midst of cadaver laden rubble. The city should be a rescue ops only area. Use locals if they want to volunteer for rescue work but living there should not be an option while cadavers are rotting, buildings are on the edge of collapse and looting is a temptation.

When the magnitude of the disaster became apparent on Day 1, that 90% of the structures had collapsed in Port-au-Prince and the surrounding area, with an estimated population of over 3 million, to my mind there were three obvious paths the Obama administration could follow:

Option 1. Recognizing that it is impossible to provide sufficient relief through one third-world airport, the Obama administration assumes leadership over the UN and the missing Haitian government, locates the nearest civilian or military salvage cranes to clear the fallen cranes from the ship channel and works around the clock to reopen the seaport within a few days of the quake, and simultaneously organizes supplies via cargo ships to establish giant tent cities in and around Port-au-Prince. Pending the seaport opening, the airport is used to the extent it can be.

The planning would have to be started on Day 1 in order to have camps begin operating by Week 2. Because of the time required to plan and execute such an effort, waiting a couple of weeks before getting started would probably be too late to save hundreds of thousands from death from infection, cholera, dysentery, violence, etc.

Option 2. The Obama administration waits for the Haitian government and the UN to assume leadership in the crisis. The Obama administration emphasizes using the airport, knowing that a dramatic airlift would be tailor-made for television news coverage to highlight its efforts. An underwater assessment of the seaport is not even begun until several days after the disaster. No plans are made for giant refugee camps. Instead, the plan is to leave the Haitian population among the collapsed structures and hundreds of thousands of decaying corpses and dozens of desperate, violent, roving gangs, and distribute the aid from the airport throught the area to the millions of Haitians. By Week 3, there will be vast numbers of Haitians who survived the earthquake who will now by dying from disease, because the plan is unable to succeed.

Option 3. Same as Option 2, except that when large numbers of Haitians begin dying from disease in front of the world’s news cameras, the Obama administration proposes to bring large numbers of Haitians to the US as the only solution to save their lives. With the MSM leading the cheers and playing on the compassion of the American people, eventually a Haitian population in the millions is established in Florida and eastern Long Island, resulting in a significant long-term increase in the Democratic voting base.

It appears to me that the Obama administration has opted for either Option 2 or Option 3; time will tell which one.

Trailers are not a good idea on an island which is regularly pummeled by hurricanes, Sir John.

It's what, six months before they even have to worry about hurricanes?
