3 charged in alleged plot to ship possible nuclear-weapons items to Iran

Three men, including an Iranian-born chemical engineer living in Glendale, have been charged in a scheme to smuggle sophisticated industrial components into Iran that could be used in the development of a nuclear weapon, authorities said Wednesday.

The case has drawn interest at the highest levels of government, an official with Immigration and Customs Enforcement told The Times. The charges come as the U.S. is rallying allies to block Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

When Carter initiated the embargo on military hardware to Iran, I saw a TV interview with some Iranian official. (UN?) The reporter asked that since the Iranian AF consisted of US aircraft, what was Iran going to do for spare parts etc? The Iranian smirked and said, “We’re dealing with American businessmen here. We’ll have no problem getting what we need.”

That was thirty years ago and I still remember it.
