Press Releases

Embassy Closed in Response to Security Threat

The U.S. Embassy in Sana’a is closed today, January 3, 2010, in response to ongoing threats by Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) to attack American interests in Yemen.

On December 31, the U.S. Embassy sent a warden message to Americans citizens in Yemen to remind them of the continuing threat of terrorist actions and violence against American citizens and interests throughout the world. The U.S. Embassy reminds U.S. citizens to maintain a high level of vigilance and to practice enhanced security awareness.

Obama just got through telling us these attacks are against our 'system', not us as Americans. Which is it, Obama?

Wrong. It is cowardly to leave and turn the country over to the enemy in this war.

Obama ducks again.

The President needs to retaliate harshly and militarily for this Al Qaeda attack on the US. Destroy their training camps and staging areas. Soon!

Al Qaeda says the US is weak. Don't prove them right by turning tail and doing nothing again.

Probably a good idea to pull our embassy people out of there.

I’m not sure Americans would tolerate another 444 day stint of a Hostage Crisis as we did while Carter was President.

Eh. At this point the MSM wouldn’t even REPORT a hostage taking if it happened to save the hind end of their Golden Man-Child. Grrrrrrr!

Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP)

I think this attempt to name this group and give it an acronym is simply an attempt by the press to legitimize this group. Who in the world comes up with these names? Obviously they do not speak English so if they were to have an acronym it is unlikely to be this one.

Agreed, this is a practical problem in that we have failed to harden our embassy. The home addresses of all 511 employees is likely known to the enemy. How can they be safe if the embassy is not?

Yemen is in total war. We never closed the embassy in Baghdad or Kabul with all the fighting there.

And, we just released 6 more Yemenis to Yemen.

We are planning to release 91 more, back to Yemen. There will come a time when the Obama administration will appear to be collectively incompetent to a point of treason.

AQ leadership in Arabia chose that name to distinguish themselves from AQ as a global entity. AQAP is more than a franchise, it is the core leadership of AQ come to Arabia to restore the caliphate to islam and destroy the House of Saud.

Sounds right to me.

Also, simply because Bush released Gitmo types isn’t the issue now - it’s my understand that the real hard core terrorists remain in Gitmo, but all of a sudden under Obama they are ready to go....

We really need a ‘talk softly but carry a big stick’ approach at this time, perhaps not talking so softly at this point. Let’s face it, Obama is as soft as they come and no one believes he would use a big stick and if he does, it would only be a showtime event, not serious and ongoing.

We seem really screwed right now. I’m just happy that I have no need to fly anywhere at this point in my life but I feel the pain of Americans do will be flying - up to 300 of them may face death in the near future. We are, at this point, acting way to civilized to stop disasters - especially with those that want to kill Americans not civilized at all. What a shame.

I think the US pulled all non-essentials and dependents out of the embassy about 3 or 4 years ago. I went to Yemen on vacation last year.
