The more pro-abortion leaders attempt to silence opposition to the pro-abortion Senate bill, the more people speak out.
Rep. Bart Stupak informed Greta Van Susteren of FOX News that the White House told him to keep silent on abortion until the President had a chance to walk him through the pro-abortion Nelson-Reid Amendment.
Stupak responded, "I don't need you to walk me through the amendment. I can read, and this amendment is unacceptable." He went on to explain his objections to the Senate bill:
-- It recognizes abortion as a benefit covered under disease prevention (by this logic, the baby must be the disease)
-- It forces taxpayers to subsidize health care plans that pay for abortions (in direct violation of the Hyde Amendment)
-- It forces every enrollee in the federal exchange to pay a monthly fee to fund "reproductive rights" (abortion)
As you know, the Senate bill and the House bill must now be reconciled in a conference between Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid. Nancy Pelosi has already indicated her intention of making sure that the abortion funding of the Senate bill is included in the final bill instead of the Stupak Amendment.
Urge your Members of Congress to oppose the unacceptable Senate health care bill on the final vote.
As Harry Reid and Barack Obama forced this pro-abortion bill through the Senate, popularity for abortion funding plummeted to new depths. Only 23% of Americans now support federal funding of abortions while 72% oppose it, according to a new Quinnipiac University poll released just last week.
Now, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has stepped forward to condemn the Senate bill. The Bishops have warned that its blatant taxpayer funding of abortion may force them to use their lobbying arm in an attempt to bury the bill on the final vote.

Again: there were 42 members of the House who voted both in favor of the Stupak amendment to bar taxpayer funding for abortions and in favor of the main bill. Clearly, Speaker Nancy Pelosi couldn't have won passage of health care legislation had the House not adopted pro-life language.
The names below are all of those who voted in favor of both measures, with an asterisk next to those who were considered undecided on the morning of the vote.
To be clear, many of these members would have supported the health care bill no matter what. However, given the 220-215 vote margin on the House vote, what it means is that when the pro-life language is stripped from the bill during negotiations with the Senate, if Pelosi loses the support of any three of these people below as a result -- without picking up anybody else's support -- the bill cannot pass the House.

Bad News: He will, and he won't.
I don’t think Mr. Stupak will be of any help in the end.
I dont think Mr. Stupak will be of any help in the end

He will settle for something, just like Nelson.
I agree. This seems like a stunt to get him reelected. Until he delivers, I call this BS.
Stupak is a DEMOCRAT. There is no question which way he will vote at the end of the day.
Every “Blue Dog” Democrat is a....DEMOCRAT.
I’m amazed that people think these guys will eat their own. They only eat Republicans.
Get real.
I don’t trust any of these people. But I don’t see why Stupak should have gone on with Gretta and said this, unless he did, indeed, intend to vote against this bill unless it has a real pro-life amendment. He could have just stayed quiet and kept a low profile; but he didn’t.
To me, that seems hopeful. Of course we will need a good number of other anti-abortion votes to stick with him. The exact number is unknown, since Pelosi may have given a few people permission to vote “no” the first time who will flip this time if she calls on them.
“Compromising” on abortion always makes me think of the woman who told King Solomon, “OK, let’s split the baby and each take half.”
Yeah, I’ll believe this when it happens. We always hear this then some sleazy deal is cut and voila! The turd passes.
I’m tired of this.
“Walk him through the amendment” really means “make him an offer he can’t refuse” in Rahm-speak.
Pre-emptive surrender is not a plan.
Unlike so many others here I haven’t given up and will write to Stupak. He isn’t my congressman but he’s still better than mine who doesn’t even pretend to care what we the people want.
I agree, Mrs. Don-o. I will make the calls. I won’t ever be in the position of not having done all I could.
And thanks for the post.
This Chicago political machine is greatly overrated. It is based on bullying people but like in all cases bullies are cowards and when you stand up to them they back down and run away.
HE WILL CAVE.
One of Nancy’s LAP DOGS.
The content of any federal version of health care is irrelevant since Article 1 Section 8 does not specifically grant Congress the power to regulate health care. The people are not bound by an unconstitutional act of Congress and do not need to comply. That is the point people should be impressing on the Congress critters!
Last time there was an amnesty fight, they said that writing to Debbie Stabenow was a waste of time but in the end she voted the right way.
I never give up because I’m not beaten while I still draw breath.
And pass up the opportunity to be a star in
?
Wow, a Nelson-Reid amendment. Can you believe that? First Nelson tells his voters he is anti-abortion; then he takes a bribe; then he co-authoris an amendment. What kind if jerk is he?
We have way too many of these sell out coward scum traitors in our Congress today.
I hope Stupak believes and does what he says.
