Police said as many as 11 students beat up the eighth-grader leaving him severely injured, and he may even lose his sight.
CBS 2 HD spoke with some of his friends about what led to the brutal attack.
The incident near a school soccer field was so violent that 13-year-old David Muneton needed reconstructive surgery to his face to correct several broken bones.
His friends at the Janis Dismus Middle School in Englewood are stunned.
"It's so hard. … I'm his best friend," Denise Melendez said before breaking down in tears.
Police have arrested seven students from both the middle school and high school, charging them with aggravated assault. The youngest one is just 12 years old.
Investigators said the teenagers jumped Muneton on Friday as he walked home from school to get back at him for an earlier incident during which the eighth-grader accidentally hit a girl with a basketball.
The superintendent said the girl, who has also been charged, led the boys to Muneton, saying "He's the one."
"We do know that after the girl made the comment one of the people, the boys, who was with him immediately punched him," Superintendent Dr. Richard Segall said.
Students at the middle school have made a get well card for the 13-year-old -- all of them outraged over what happened.
"He really didn't deserve to get beat up like that because he really didn't do anything and it wasn't intentional that he hit her with a ball," student Michael Bailey said.
"If I was there Ii would have told someone," student Emanuel Doughtery added.
"I wrote I hope he gets better soon," said student Katherine Saldarriga.
Muneton is recovering at Englewood Hospital. His brother told CBS 2 HD his condition is improving. The assistant principal said the youngster is a model student.
"He is a wonderful young man, actually one of our students who made the honor roll this quarter," Daniella Bailey said.
As these kids try to make sense of what happened all seven students arrested have been suspended. This coming as police was looking to charge four more teenagers.
Three of the students charged remain at the juvenile detention center in Paramus, while the rest have been released to their parents -- two of them required to wear ankle bracelets.
What really should happen is the attackers should be stoned per the old testament, but I’m sure they’ll all get good jobs in the future.
If an ankle bracelet is the penalty, that's for sure. - The penalty under the law is life without parole, and that is the least that they deserve.

The commentsat the originating site of the news item. You know, it’s ironic that northern Idaho has been so thoroughly tarred with the white hate / white supremacist brush. Nobody around here cared very much for the Aryan Nations types when they were around. Most folks here are pretty tolerant as long as you mind your own business and mind your manners. Not too musch to ask, is it?
But if you want to see real hate, just take a little journey to your nearest blue zone. Like the one from where the article’s comments issue. A lovely mix of white supremacists and black haters. Look there for your flashpoints.
I don’t know if a nation stupid enough to elect BO in the first place is smart enough to wise up and vote him out in 2012.
I also wouldn’t put it past BO and his scummy crew to try and steal the election to stay put and continue their trashing of America.
But....I’ve been saying all year that if BO gets beat in 2012, there WILL be riots. I’d be totally surprsed if there weren’t.
God willing, that will spur a huge backlash—I’d rather it didn’t happen, but if or when it does, there needs to be a fight.

Roger that. And that’s exactly why we beat feet out of he Puget Sound area over a decade ago. That, and the atrocious publick screwl system. It was the Howard Zinn ‘A People’s History of America’ posters and teaching materials in the kids classroom that was the last straw.
I grew up in an “inner city” area in a Southern port city back in the late 50’s - early 60’s. The difference is that we would fight back and kick ass. In numbers if neccessary.

Well in my grandad’s case it was a little skinny kid against five - he said they’d just do it for the fun of it ... the only thing that finally saved him was a new school opened up closer to where he lived -

I find it very interesting you pulled the comments from this story, and that your organization failed to report the racial angle to this story. Shame on you all around. By preventing frank discussion of what is going on here, you are helping create a higher-pressure situation that will eventually blow. It may not be this year, or the next, or the one after, but any thinking person sees it can’t go on forever.
I’m glad I live no where near there.

Newsrooms work very hard at being isolated from everyday citizens. Fellow elite liberals are so much more forgiving...
I'm not surprised that the comments section was removed as of sometime this morning.
The people who engaged in the Rwandan Massacre did not even have TV, much less video games. There are MILLIONS of kids who play violent video games, and yet grow up into productive lives.
Judging from the other comments on the news site, payback WILL be a bit_h, and it will come sooner than he realizes.
And the Democrat party WILL be seen as the Obama party. Obama is an albatross who will be hung around the neck of the Democrat party like with steel cables.
