WASHINGTON (AP) - The number of newly laid off workers filing claims for unemployment benefits unexpectedly rose last week as the recovery of the nation's battered labor market proceeds in fits and starts.
The Labor Department said Thursday that the number of new jobless claims rose to 480,000 last week, up 7,000 from the previous week. That was a worse performance than the decline to 465,000 that economists had expected.

Surprise! Surprise! Surprise!
Walmart just had a big lay off last week here. Right before the holiday busy season, no less. They’re sales are down. Everyone’s sales are down.
On doctor's orders, I no longer play drinking games. The 2008 election nearly killed me, as my drinking game was played every time McCain said "my friends".
The doc gave me an alternative that seems much healthier: have a beer everytime Obama promises "tort reform", or Jerry Jones promises to fire himself as the GM of the Cowboys.
Take Tiger Woods out of the mix, and it's only 479,999.
the number of people receiving regular benefits rose by 5,000 to 5.19 million .
That figure does not include millions of people who have used up the regular 26 weeks of benefits .
Just put the glass down every time you hear O Bama say “unprecedented” or “inherited”.
What is it with this word: unexpectedly?
As long as it is “unexpected” the bad news is not quite as bad? Is that what it is?
Is this the Drive-By-Media’s version of: “Look deep into my eyes. Deeper. There is no recession. The economy is not as bad as it seems. Now go deeper.”
You know, cuz last week we just weren’t expecting things to be so bad this week, aw shucks.
As long as some nameless authority is “expecting” it to get better then it can’t be all that bad, right?
Nothing to see here folks. Move along. Go back to sleep.
Too many of these journalist-worms are using this word for it to be a coinkydink, methinks.
Of course it is Unexpectedly, this is the “hope and change” administration and they always predict and hope that these things will change for the better under their “enlightened” rule. The rest of us are left to hope that the change is the total collapse and outlawing of the Nazi democrat party in this country.
Walmart??? Now that is amazing. I never thought Walmart would suffer.
Not the case for MSM.
Unless the fraud is so blatently outlandish and intentional, i.e. Dan Rather.
Then you can get hired at Wayne's World cable outfits.
I was just thinking about Cloward-Piven, and Alinski. Overload the system and encourage my wife and anyone else to submit for umemployment. My job is secure and we could get by fine without hers. If everyone piles on, unemployment spikes economy grinds to a halt even more showing the Dems to be even more incompetent. It’s like fighting cancer with chemo...just thinking out load.
Yep, you know things are bad when Bush causes Walmart to suffer.
Don’t you remember when Bush was Pres. the Dems used to B*tch that the economy was doomed because ONLY 200,000 JOBS OR SO WERE CREATED?!
People that I know are basically expecting to lose there jobs at anytime if they haven’t already.
I really don’t know if we will survive 3 more years.
There are so many ‘fudge factors’ to account for seasonal work that the current number is very suspect. It’s as bad as the Global Warming computer models.
“I never thought Walmart would suffer.”
It’s bad out there. I have quite a few business clients that are panic-stricken.
I hope FReepers are planning accordingly.
If the bleeding doesn’t stop pretty soon we could be looking at The Great Depression 2.0, unexpectedly.
I was listening to an AP radio news brief today and they pulled another favorite trick - they didn’t mention the number, just that it was 7000 higher than economists had expected. I’ve been noticing for some time that they don’t like to say the number of the DJIA, they just report the delta. I don’t really understand why that is, but I know there’s some reason.
WOOPS!!! Just the other day, the jobs thing dropped, the world was better, we had recovered. Now this. Boy, that messiah thing is just not working out for the Chicago gangster.
You hope for the best but you plan for the worst.
Politicians refuse to use this simple concept.
I’ll never forget hearing them say that the DJIA “Crashed through the 14000 barrier”. That seems like a long time ago.
