A southwest suburban woman has been charged with a hate crime for an alleged attack on a Muslim woman at a grocery earlier this month.
Amal Abusumayah was paying for groceries at the Jewel store at 17117 S. Harlem Ave. in Tinley Park on Nov. 7 when she felt a sharp tug on her headscarf. When she looked at who had pulled her hijab, she saw a woman who moments before had made a derogatory comment about Islam.
On Wednesday, Tinley Park police announced that Valerie Kenney, 54, has been charged with a hate crime, a felony that carries a possible sentence of up to three years in prison and a fine of up to $25,000.
"I was shaken up," Abusumayah told the SouthtownStar about the Nov. 7 assault. "This is my dignity and this is my religion."
Ahmed Rehab of the Chicago chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations said his organization has reached out to the FBI to pursue federal charges.
Kenney is scheduled to appear in bond court in Bridgeview later Wednesday.
I’m not sure I see the crime other than harassment.
I missed the crime in the story. Is it really a felony and 3 years in prison for sharply pulling on someone’s clothing?
I bet Hasan doesn’t get charged with a hate crime!

That is the whole point of hate crime legislation. It gives them a statute to hid behind when no other crime has been committed.
Apparently she was taunting her about Hasan being ‘from the Middle East’. The woman in the scarf is actually a native born citizen.
Tugging on the scarf is obnoxious and dangerous if the person physically reacts, but I don't think it's in the league of assault or battery. Mannered people would simply say excuse me to get the woman's attention or call her M'am.

The crime could be battery or assault (I forget the difference) because you cannot place your hands on another person without their permission but this is overkill. Welcome to the world of the Left where everything is topsy turvy and makes no sense.

A sharp tug on a scarf and a derogatory comment gets you 3 years in jail and confiscation of assets. (as long as you are White and you do it to a specially-privileged protected group)
Planning and/or executing terrorist attacks in which innocent people are killed gets you the sympathy of the entire leftist establishment.
