Washington (CNN) -- Military victims of the Fort Hood massacre will be eligible to receive the Purple Heart if Congress passes a bill introduced Tuesday.

Non-military victims could receive the Secretary of Defense Medal of Freedom -- the civilian equivalent of the Purple Heart. Both military and civilian personnel killed or wounded in the November 5 attack would be granted the same legal status as combatant casualties in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The bill was introduced by Texas GOP Rep. John Carter, who represents Fort Hood in the House of Representatives.

Why do we even have to ask and why does a congressman have to do something that Bob Gates should have done from day one and Where the hell is the media on this? ....

Has D.C. Bob even been asked?

>If they get the Purple Heart, that means they were wounded in combat. If they were wounded in combat, psycho-doc was an enemy combatant, not a psycho-doc. If Obambi vetos the Purple Heart bill, he looks like crap. If he signs it, there was a terrorist attack on US soil, and he looks worse. Obama: Is there some way I can vote “present”?<

Quite the pickle.

"Death and injury by the enemy (the requirements for a Purple Heart)"

No, that's not correct. Here are the requirements for a Purple heart.

To include an attack such as this in the awarding of the Purple Heart, would be to devalue it, and lessen it's meaning to those who have gone before us, with un-impeachable entitlement.

When WE start playing loose with the rules to make our political points, then we can only expect, and not complain, when the other side does, also.

There should be a new Medal created and awarded for this. And in so doing, we could bring to light all of the extended reasons why this really was a terrorist attack by a muzzie fanatic.

John Freakin' Kerry would love to see this happen.

I disdain your euphemism of REMF. Any idea how many REMF died supporting the “real” combat heros?

A REMF, as you put it, puts his azz on the line, too, and many are killed by doing so.

You denigrate these good men and women who worked to allow our actual combat forces to perform their work.

If Obambi vetos the Purple Heart bill, he looks like crap.

Do you really think this bill will ever get to his desk?

My take on this is that if the Purple Hearts are awarded that means this was in fact a terrorist attack. By awarding these medals, Obama would be conceding that Dick Cheney was right when hs said we, as a nation, are less safe today than we were under the Bush administration.

On the other hand, I'd hate to be the congress critter that votes no on this effort. There will have to be some rule implemented that keep this bill from ever seeing the light of day.

You’ll post pics of the front lines as soon as they are ready, won’t you?

After 28 March 1973, as a result of an international terrorist attack against the United States or a foreign nation friendly to the United States, recognized as such an attack by the Secretary of the Army, or jointly by the Secretaries of the separate armed services concerned if persons from more than one service are wounded in the attack.

Lifted from your source.

So you, along with this administration, don't believe this was a terrorist attack either?

I think the Purple Heart should be restricted to injuries sustained on the battlefield.

Define a battlefield, as opposed to what was described about Ft. Hood.

I absolutely agree with this- these soldiers died at the hands of our common enemy. They deserve the medal.

I think it’s an excellent idea, because, for one thing, it brings the focus back to the people who died - and the fact that they died in the military, on a military base, killed by an enemy of their country.

The press and the government have completely forgotten them and are stepping all over each other trying to defend their killer. Have we gone mad?

No, we haven’t but it seems they have.

If it’s not some kind of bizarre Stockholm Syndrome then they are covertly going sharia on US.

>> I don’t see it happening with this congress under this administration <<

Yep, but I think the new GOP-controlled Congress can take the measure up again in January 2011.

And let’s hope the law also will be changed to allow awarding the Congressional Medal of Honor to the two civilian cops who bravely risked their lives to bring down the shooter.

Lol, this is an awesome move:

Yes to purple hearts - Hasan is a terrorist.
No to purple hearts - Democrats show their flippancy for our armed forces.

I don’t like the idea. Do service members who are killed by illegal immigrants on welfare get a purple heart? I think the Purple Heart should be restricted to injuries sustained on the battlefield.

Battlefield? Do bullets rip and bone through the flesh different there? Do battlefields have boundaries?

Did ya know this guy down in Texas was signing his emails: "Praise be to Allah"

Did ya know Hasan was complaining daily that his fellow soldiers should be prosecuted for war crimes.... and they were getting ready to send him to Iraq???

Did ya know he called his female Captain an, "Infidel that should burn in hell"..

Ya want my opinion?

America has been betrayed in broad daylight, and we're surrounded by traitors at every turn, right here, right now.
