How Can Glenn Beck Be Right on So Much and Yet Still Believe the book of Mormon? (serious question)

Posted on 10/26/2009 7:51:02 AM PDT by Scythian

I'm a huge Beck fan, in fact I'm listening right now here

http://www.ksfa860.com/common/gap_streamer.php

but something really confuses me. It takes the ability to use real critical thinking to know what Beck (and most of us know about the state of the country and where we are heading). That is, we have the ability to discover the truth no matter how much the media or conventional wisdom try to hide it. Yet on Mormonism, Beck is cleary wrong. Any Christian knows that the book or momonism is severely flawed and that Joseph Smith was no prophet. How can Beck cut through all the chaff of what is going on in our world and come to the truth and yet believe the writings of Joseph Smith? It doesn't make sense? I'm not saying he's up to something secret, not by any means, it's just that he's so right about so many things and completely wrong on the most important thing. Now, he just said on the air that he believes Jesus is the Savior of the world and that he is Mormon.

I also think that because he is Mormon he is not attacked near as much if he was a Evangelical Bible only believer. Anyway, am I nutz or does Beck being a Mormon seem bizarre?

Next time you wish to quote me, at least quote me correctly. There is a bizarre inconsistency with Beck; on one hand - yes - he is reporting what all of us are thinking, and much of it already known. The saddest part is the foundation of his religious core. Religion is at the core of our foundation. How could Beck leave the One True Church and take up with Joe’s Myth? Focus on that. Thanks.

The True Church...

Eph 4

There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism—Apostles and prophets essential to the Church—Saints exhorted to live righteously—They are sealed unto the day of redemption.

1 I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called,

2 With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love;

3 Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

4 There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling;

5 One Lord, one faith, one baptism,

6 One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.

7 But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ.

8 Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men.

9 (Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth?

10 He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.)

11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;

12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:

13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:

I said it. We had 150 people at the phone bank making calls. We found one Protestant, some Catholics and 90% LDS people. Not a problem for me to state the facts.

WHO made this survey, and WHY? WHERE was the survey made...what is the percentage of mormons vs Christians in this area? Was there a "prize" for the highest percentage of religionists who showed up?

As a former mormon, I am aware that when local leaders pass the word along that SLC has "suggested" that a cause is to be favored, members dutifully turn out to do their bidding.

Of course, this is all done with the ethics of a church/state conflict in mind...and BTW...

Ah, but there are contemporaneous accounts of Jesus by Paul, Peter and the Apostles and historical references by Josephus. None exist of Mohammed.

None of those accounts are contemporaneous.

I prefer to focus on the fact you have a Socialist Party member and communist sympathizer quoted on your profile page. That is the core of your foundation here.

Peter, Paul and the other Apostles didn’t give written accounts of their personal, contemporaneous relationships with Jesus? Really?

"Peter, Paul and the other Apostles didn’t give written accounts of their personal, contemporaneous relationships with Jesus? Really?"

The gospels were not written until decades after the events they depict were supposed to have happened, so they aren't contemporaneous. They are also anonymous.

"...The word is primarily used to refer to the four canonical texts: the Gospel of Matthew, Gospel of Mark, Gospel of Luke and Gospel of John, probably written between AD 65 and 80. [1][2] They appear to have been originally untitled; they were quoted anonymously in the first half of the second century (i.e. 100 - 150) but the names by which they are currently known appear suddenly around the year 180.[3]"

As I said, their relationships were contemporaneous. They knew him. They traveled with him. They wrote their memories and accounts of him down on paper. Flavius Josephus wrote historical references about him.

None of that exists for Mohammed.

And don't drag wikipedia into a discussion of Jesus. Come on.

Gospels

Yes isn’t it strange that is all we have is a 3rd or 4th copy no originals.

I often find that strange because Oral Tradition is not as reliable as written.

Even the Lord told Moses to write down the Commandments so there seems to be a conflict when we are told of various accounts.

Yet some would like one to believe that the Bible is infallible and inerrant while it resides in this temporal world.

Because of this distortion one allows stumbling blocks to be set up and the opposition can continue in half truths!

After all the first lie or half truth was told in garden of Eden which was more stable than the temporal world we reside in even in the garden of Eden the Lord was able walked with Adam and Eve.

If one ponders King Herod.

We see he has a record of Biblical evens written down on scrolls.

I hear ya.

At least Beck doesn’t go around with an obsession of condemning other people’s religions but rather spends his time trying to save the republic. That’s one of the great things about America...FREEDOM of worship. Scary that some ‘conservatives’ work so hard to destroy that. But for now I have a brick wall to pound my head against, and don’t need to waste time on the internet doing the same thing.

ROTFL! So "written" is defined as a scribble from words dictated by a man looking into a hat claiming the words were being "translated" from golden plates that were "taken by an angel" into heaven as an explanation as to why the plates cannot be examined for authenticy and the world is to take the word of a handful of men who may or may not have actually seen these plates.

Yeah, I can understand where that "written tradition" would be reliable.
