Tanker explodes on I-465 ramp

Indianapolis - A semi tanker has exploded on the southbound ramp from I-69 to I-465.

The fire from the vehicle is creating dark plumes of black smoke which can be seen for miles. A second alarm has been requested to the scene. Views from a tower cam show that the billboards are also on fire.

The accident is causing large back-ups on I-465. The crash is before the Allisonville Road exit.

Injuries are being reported. Witnesses reported hearing loud noises.

Witness Danielle Smith was on 465 headed to Keystone at the Crossing. In her rear-view mirror, she saw a wall of flames.

"I didn't know if it was a truck or a building or anything like that. All the traffic started slowing down," she said.

After the flames, Smith said she saw a lot of smoke. She wasn't sure what type of vehicle was involved.

SkyTrak Weather meteorologist Chuck Lofton says the small fires that broke out along the interstate were aided by the wind, which has picked up to 20 mph.

Sounds like it’d be lots of little BLEVEs looking for a place to happen.

Bye, bye, Miss American Pie
In a bevy of BLEVEs, blew my Chevy sky high...

I 69, which feeds into I 465 at this spot, is the busiest highway in the state of Indiana. It goes up to Fishers. These towns are some of the fastest growing around here.
The Major Moves initiative of the governor was to widen I 69, which they are in the process of doing, to be finished in 2012.
This road is closed today and we don’t know when it will be reopened. It depends on whether there is damage to that overpass bridge.
The truck burned under a bridge. They are checking for damage soon, maybe tomorrow.

Some of the billboards around the accident area were on fire, as was a cell tower and that includes traffic cameras, according to the websites of some of the TV stations.

A similar incident happened in Rochester NY a few years ago.

I used to sometimes drive through a little town in New York State where there had been a gasoline tanker explosion. All that was left of the downtown area was a bank vault in an otherwise empty lot. I think the town was called Locke.

About “the” interstate ... we just call them by number here (native Hoosier speaking) ... so when I heard there was an explosion at 469 and 69 I could picture the area. We’ve been through there many times.

My cousin lives in Fishers and her husband works on the other side of town by the airport. She says it’ll be a traffic nightmare for months.

So thankful no one was killed, but prayers for the injured.

I know. But it does help to have people want to watch the news and entertainment surrounding the ads. No news and entertainment, no ads.

I work in the office complex just over the highway from where this happened. At first the building shook when the truck exploded, everyone thought it was an earthquake, we ran outside to a hugh plume of smoke and the sounds of more, smaller explosions.

Accident, or TERROR?

Nothing I see locally has any link to terror.

I was stuck on the interstate for an hour, that was the extent of the terror.

People say “the 290” around Buffalo. And Indiana doesn’t consider itself east coast.

Apparently the "the" interstate language disease is spreading. I meant to say eastern US, as in east of the Mississippi.

In post #42...

That does not look much like just propane burning...

But then again, tires, diesel, the truck itself...Must be what is left of all of that burning then...

That is a lucky driver...

I knew someone who died in a fire like that, but not for several days. Horrific.
