Rescuers are tracking and chasing a "homemade flying saucer" that is in flight with a 6-year-old, by himself, on board.
The incident started this morning in Fort Collins when the boy got into the balloon-like device, which was built by an adult, and it came loose from a tether, according to the Larimer County Sheriff's Office.
The contraption could rise as high as 10,000 feet, the sheriff's office said.
The home-made flying saucer was last seen in flight over Weld County.
The sheriff's office is working the Federal Aviation Administration to determine how to best get the boy down.

Then there was that episode of Three's Company where there was a misunderstanding
ok, more info. Sheriff (at least I think it was a sheriff) says that:
a) the older sibling was adamant and very clear that he had seen his 6 year old brother get into the apparatus, and
b) the 6 year old got scared when the balloon came untethered that he would get in trouble, and hid.
So that’s the latest word on what happened. I’m just glad that a story that could’ve well had a horrific ending has concluded happily... except for a lost balloon and possibly for the 6-year-old’s backside.
If so, smart thinking. Probably the fastest way to get someone to track the craft.

Parents press conference. The dad says the balloon is an early stage invention to use for your car to hover over traffic.
When I was a little girl, I use to use the next door neighbors fence to crawl up on the roof of our garage....Until one day my mother saw me up there....geez, kids do the darnest things....raised 5 and the stories I could tell.....like most parents we just pray they survive childhood. Thats how kids learn and act.. I loved climbing trees also, out of sight of my mom.

I bet the kid let the balloon go, and went and hid because he was afraid he’d get in trouble.

I was surprised that it took almost a full hour after this thread started that someone on FR made this comment!
There was a a prayer to that effect, but no “bet” until after it had grounded.
He also said that they don’t believe in grounding their children.
