I posted this Friday morning long before people realized that this was all a hoax.

Balloon boy: hoax rumours as Falcon Heene says ‘we did this for the show’

KeyLargo to GoldStandard

My opinion:

Balloon Boy is a hoax.

Balloon boy dad will be sued by government agencies inolved in the search.

Balloon boy dad will have a book written about him and a made for TV movie, where he will have the income to pay off the lawsuits.

Balloon boy dad will be charged with misdemeanor filing of false police report.

Balloon boy story will occupy all of the weekend news shows and generate ratings boosts.

Balloon boy story will detract from the real story of Obama taking over our healthcare, which Obama will highly appreciate.

The police have so far maintained that they believe the family has all been truthful. Surely there will be more thought about that, but so far I think that the police judgment should be given deference here.

The police judgment is in:

The sheriff's announcement included an admission that authorities misled the media on Friday when they said they still believed it was not a hoax. After Falcon's remark on CNN Thursday night, "it became very clear to us at that point that they were lying," Alderden said.

The "nonverbal responses" and "verbal cues" from the children at that moment made it clear, Alderden said.

But to get to the truth, "it was very important during this time that they maintained their trust with us." So investigators misled the media while they carried out their "game plan" of gathering the truth.

That plan included pursuing separate interviews with the Heene parents and polygraph tests, partly by arguing that it could help end the media frenzy surrounding them, Alderden said. He added that by law he could not say whether those tests were taken.

Charges have not been filed, but authorities expect to recommend felony charges including conspiracy, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and attempting to influence a public servant, Alderden said. They also plan to recommend a charge of filing a false police report, which is a misdemeanor.

Thanks for doing the math. You are correct, the wind was not a factor in the ‘lift’ the craft could produce.

Cut and paste that into your browser and you'll see you stand corrected.
That balloon could not have lifted that kid off from Fort Collins and flown around with him and especially not while only partially inflated.

Hmm... the way I read the story, the important line is that the balloon weighs 18 pounds more than law enforcement was told, or otherwise it would have been capable of lift off with a 37# child. It sounds like my calculations of its capacity of lifting 50-60pounds total were quite accurate, and that my contention the concern of people that the child might have been in the craft were not misplaced.
