Researchers theorized how to design a table-top black hole earlier this year. Now two ambitious Chinese scientists have actually built one—using the same materials that made invisibility cloaks possible. The theoretical model for the black hole aped the properties of a cosmological black hole, whose intense gravity bends the surrounding space-time, causing any nearby matter or radiation to follow the warped space-time and spiral inwards. The working Chinese model consists of a cylinder, made up of strips of a special material that increasingly affects electric fields. As rays of light approach the device, they curve inward towards its center, where the permittivity (a characteristic that describes how the material affects an electric field) is such that the light cannot escape. The device then converts the light into heat energy.

Hmmm. . . We know that E=MC (squared), thanks to Einstein.
IOW, matter and energy are interchangeable, just different forms of one another.
If light can be converted into energy, and if the universe was first filled with light (”Let there be light”), and then
the energy could become matter...
I seriously doubt they have built a blackhole or a cloaking device.
Color me extremely skeptical. At the quantum level the light should have no trouble escaping.
Isn’t it either going to melt or radiate infrared light?

Seriously, I don’t think that anyone on Earth currently has the technology to create a true black hole at this point - and I’m glad. We don’t need to be messing with things on the planet that can EAT the planet, thanks very much.

As described, this has nothing to do with a gravitational black hole, but sounds like an approach to the ideal “black body” of radiation theory, which is a perfect absorber of impinging light.
Exactly. This is just Fox News fundamentally misunderstanding what a black hole is. What these guys appear to have done (from the claim) is to use to meta-materials to simulate some of the characteristics of a black hole. At most.
